Everything to Do in NY This Spring!!

where to see cherry blossoms in ny.jpeg

Spring has officially been here for a few weeks, but it’s finally starting to feel like it! The weather is warming up and the days are getting longer, so it’s time to get out and start enjoying the new season. NYC is beautiful this time of year and the energy is so refreshing after what felt like a winter that would never end! Spring is a pretty short-lived season, so get out and make the most of it while you can!

Check out the Cherry Blossoms and all the Spring Blooms

Cherry blossoms are blooming everywhere right now! The ones in Central Park are full and fluffy, and the blooms at New York Botanical Garden and Brooklyn Botanical Garden are nearing peak bloom. Some people consider Sakura Matsuri the can’t miss cherry blossom moment of the season, but it’s insanely crowded. I prefer to visit on an off day when I can really take my time wandering the garden and enjoying the view, without the hundreds of people.

NYBG is also home to stunning fields of daffodils and azaleas that are about halfway to peak bloom right now. Keep your eyes on their bloom tracker to best time your visit. And definitely don’t miss the Orchid Show, that is running until April 28th!

Get Reservations at all the Rooftops and Gardens

Dining al fresco is so necessary but getting coveted tables for you and the squad can be tricky! I usually start booking reservations a few weeks in advance, then making plans with friends as I go. Waiting until the last-minute means missing out on prime outdoor seating during the most popular hours. A lot of places do take walk-ins, but I prefer not to be at the mercy of a wait list that can easily be an hour long! Plan a head or pick less popular times to make sure you can have the perfect Spring dining experience while the season lasts. My favorites are Lauduree, Public Kitchen, Jimmy for drinks and Serra at Eataly

Visit New Exhibits at all the City’s Museums

A museum day is one of my favorite things to do, especially on days where the weather is not quite nice enough to be outside. The iconic Costume Institute at the Met Museum opens May 9th and Brooklyn Museum has an incredible Frida Kahlo exhibit on now through May 12th. That one requires timed entry passes and they are selling out fast, so make sure you sign up asap! And on May 3rdthey open Nobody Promised You Tomorrow, a collection of work from 22 LGBTQ artists 50 years after Stonewall.

Update Your Wardobe with Some Spring Shopping

The Perfect Staycation at Scribners Lodge

You guys know I love to travel, and even though I've been lucky enough to do a lot of international travel, I've been working on doing more domestic travel this year. So when I had the chance to spend some time at Scribners Lodge in the Catskills, I jumped at the chance!

Scribners Catskills Lodge

Scribners is a gem of a property in Hunter, NY.  The level of comfort and attention to detail is phenomenal. The building has been around since 1966, but underwent a transformation in Fall 2016. The attention to detail is phenomenal, from the amazing staff, stylish comfy rooms and treats like s'mores kits and to-go bottles of their signature cocktails.

Plus the restaurant, Prospect is a can't miss. It really is an experience all on it's own. Cocktails and wine list are steller, and the food is as delicious and decadent as it is photogenic.

Prospect Scribners Lodge Brunch

If, like me, you can barely drive to save your life, the property is easily accessible on the Trailways Bus from Port Authority. It stops just down the road from the property and depending on traffic and how many passengers are on board, the driver may turn around and drop you off right in front of the hotel. Mine was nice enough to give me front door service since the bus was pretty empty and the road clear. But it's a pretty smooth walk from the hotel to the bus stop if they can't drop you off, or when you are making your way back.

If you are looking for a mini trip somewhere close to New York, definitely check out Scribners! But be warned - it's so nice you will pretty much not want to bother leaving.

Best in Beauty at the International Beauty Show

Beauty Show Hair Styles.JPG

Since I'm totally obsessed with beauty, I was so happy to attend the International Beauty Show this weekend. The show is the top trade show for beauty professionals, and even though it's technically for beauty pros only, I had a blast getting an insider look at the hottest new product launches, beauty tools, and wholesale pricing on everything!

Check out my highlights from the show!

Studex Booth International Beauty Show.jpg

Studex At-Home Piercing Kit

Studex is the leading manufacturer of piercing instruments, studs and supplies. Even if you've never heard of them, you've definitely touched one of their products. I partnered with Studex and Brand Backer for complimentary tickets to the show. If you go, check out their assortment of stylish studs, and maybe get a new piercing! I got one and am absolutely in love! If you want to try piercing at home with your bestie, their Piercing Kits are available for purchase here. It comes with everything you need for a new earlobe or cartilage piercing, is allergy-free, and sterilzed! And they've got even more products available at Sally's!

Curls Cashmere and Caviar Collection Launch.jpg

Curls Cashmere & Caviar Collection

Since I'm wearing my natural curls again, I was so excited to see this launch! Coming out this summer, the Cashmere & Caviar Collection is a luxe new line that promises to strengthen, restructure, and add shine. All the products felt insanely rich and luxurious and smelled beautiful. Check out curls.biz for more info on the launch! I also stocked up on their Blissful Lengths Liquid Hair Growth Vitamin, so hoping to see some results as I start using it!

Touch Beauty Cosmetic Tools.jpg

Touch Beauty Tools

I'm a little bit behind when it comes to fancy, high tech skin care gadgets, so I stopped by the Touch Beauty booth to get the scoop. Touch Beauty creates a variety of devices, from eyelash curlers, so ultasonic facial scrubbers. Their Cream Booster deliveres positive or negative electrodes to refresh and detox the skin, as well as maximize the absorption of skin care products. The Contour Sculpting Roller massages the skin and can be used for face and body. While they are mostly trade only, they have a selection of products available on Amazon

The show is in town until March 6th, so if you can get a pass stop by!

How to Spend Spring in NYC

Spring is in the air! I was majorly depressed when I came back from Cartagena to cold, rainy New York. However the weather has gotten so much warmer in the past few days, and it's finally getting me excited about the change of the season. Spring in New York is so much fun. Everyone starts to come out of their winter hibernation, rooftops and gardens start to open, and all the open spaces beckon for you to hang out and enjoy the sun. Here are some of my can't miss activities this season!

Cherry Blossom Heaven at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

While most people are obsessed with the Sakura Matsuri festival that happens April 29th-30th, I avoid that weekend like the plague. The crowds and lines make the experience completely exhausting. If you want to check out the gorgeous pink blooms in all their glory, go any other time that week when the experience will be far more enjoyable.

Tribeca Film Festival April 19th-April 30th

If you're a movie buff you can't miss Tribeca. Splurge on tickets to the buzzy premieres, or go the budget friendly route and hit up the $10 matinees.

Frieze Art Fair May 5th-May 7th

You guys know I'm an art lover. The Frieze Art Fair takes over Randall's Island, with over 100 galleries exhibiting. The work plus amazing views of the city skyline are not to be missed.

Smorgasbord April 8th-October

The weekend foodie fair opens in April and runs all summer! In the spirit of maintaining my diet and not wasting my workouts, I've been avoiding events that require me to eat and drink all day. But I will make an exception at least once for Smorgasbord.

What are your favorite ways to spend Spring weekends in the city?

Memories of My First Love

New York-Heart-Wall

Images by John Hibionada

I'm a born and raised New Yorker. The city has been the backdrop of so many of my favorite stories, and exciting adventures. I'm sure everyone who lives here feels some sort of connection to this place. For me that connection has deepened so many of my childhood and adult memories. New York moments are real, and here are a few of my most unforgettable.

My dad trying to conquer his fear of heights long enough to take me to the top of the Empire state building. He stayed well in the center of the viewing area but let me get as close to the edge as I wanted.

My school trip to Ellis Island when I suddenly became acutely aware that the identity and history documented there was not my own.

My mother dancing and twirling along the fountains outside the Met, somehow managing to never fall in.

Years later,  the memory of my first great love kissing me at Lincoln Center. He was in a tux and only took me there because he said the New York Times described it as the most romantic place to share a kiss in the city. It took 3 years after our breakup before I could stand on those steps without feeling sick.

Tearing up over the view on my last night in the city, before moving to Italy for grad school. And actually crying the first hour of the flight, halfway because of the sheer terror of moving to a country without knowing anyone or speaking the language and halfway because I was leaving the love of my life.

Every time I flew back to this city and met him.

Every time I make it home from work early enough to catch the view of the sun setting over the city from my living room window.

Here’s to my hometown

Getting in the Holiday Spirit with Kangol

I started teasing these on Instagram a few weeks ago, and I'm so happy to finally be able to share the whole campaign! I collaborated with the amazing Julius July and fellow campaign star Jennifer Burchette to celebrate Kangol's new holiday line. I was so excited to be tapped for this campaign and the chance to shoot in Dumbo, one of the city's prettiest neighborhoods. Check out the shots below and make sure to head over to Kangol.com to check out the full line!
