Not the Met Gala but Still Fun! Black Tie Galas You Can Actually Get into

Met Gala Red Carpet Fashion

Today is a national fashion holiday – the Met Gala! Every fashionista is ready to pull up a chair and stay glued to their phones and social media for a first look at what everyone will be wearing on the red carpet. I’ve never been huge on awards shows, but I love the Met Gala! The looks are always so much more creative and inspiring than your typical red carpet, and I love seeing how celebs interpret the theme each year. This year’s theme is Camp: Notes on Fashion, so I’m expecting to see a whole lot of TOO MUCH on the red carpet tonight and I’m hoping my favorite celebs take risks and have fun.

Obviously, I’m not attending the Met Gala tonight, but I do love going to the occasional gala or black-tie function. It’s always great to get uber glam and go out to show support of a cause, but the ticket prices can be astronomical! Because I’m all about living your most glam, but affordable life, I scoured the internet for the best galas with tickets you can actually afford! They are still not cheap tickets, but some start as low as $100, which is just a little bit more than dinner/drinks out in the city or a new Zara dress. Check out the list below and save this post for future reference!

Galas and Events to Save for Next Year

These are events I’ve been to myself, but the dates have passed. Pin the graphic below and reference this post when it’s time to buy tickets!

The Guggenheim Museum Young Collectors Party

The art museums flagship event is a blast! The YCC is a group of young professionals who enjoy private programs led by curators, a dedicated calendar of events, and invitations to parties and opening receptions. This is their annual formal event and tickets usually run between $200-250. Check out the Guggenheim’s Instagram for scenes from this year’s event and follow their social or website to find out about 2019 tickets!

The Museum of the City of New York Harlem Whiskey Renaissance

The Museum of the City of New York is one of my favorites. It’s all about celebrating the history and culture of NY. They have several galas and events through the year, but one not to miss is the Harlem Whiskey RenaissanceGala. The party has a lighter tone than some ofhte more traditional benefits and fundraisers, as it celebrates whiskey and its storied past as the drink of choice for artisans and intellectuals during the Harlem Renaissance. Plus I see a discount on Pulsd for this event every year, giving you about half off the already affordable tickets!

Let me know what summer events you can’t wait to attend, and of course your favorite looks on the Met Gala red carpet!

Day party season is almost over for the summer, so end it with the Essence Street Style Block Party! This event will feature performances by Teyana Taylor and Yemi Alade and is hosted by Actress and Comedienne Amanda Seales. Though it used to be free, it's well worth the ticket price!

Birthday Musings - Celebrating Yourself and (Never) Getting Older

Birthday Cake.JPG

I celebrated a birthday recently, and it was full of love, affection, fun, and amazing memories created with the people I love the most. Even though it wasn't a milestone birthday, I was still feeling super festive so decided to throw myself a slightly silly but super fun pajama party. The spirit was in line with my hashtag #NeverGettingOlder and I really wanted to create a fun youthful vibe. Thanks to a lot of Pinterest searching, crafty DIY's and a generous discount on the perfect space thanks to Peerspace, my party was a hit.

Pajama Party.JPG

But as much as I love living in my youth, I am older, and am starting to embrace that things are changing. Even though I still look younger than I am, my skin, my body, my mind and my heart have changed and grown over the years. So here's to celebrating more, growing more, and loving myself more every year! I hope that you all find the spirit to celebrate yourselves and your accomplishments in the manner that you deserve. Remember, no one is going to celebrate you the way that you celebrate yourself. So whether it's an elaborate party or just popping a bottle of your favorite bubbly with a handful of friends, you deserve it

Tell me about what you'll be celebrating this year. And if you are looking for the perfect space for any event, checkout Peerspace. You can rent anything from a studio to a beautifully decorated loft, with options for every price range and party size!

Best in Beauty at the International Beauty Show

Beauty Show Hair Styles.JPG

Since I'm totally obsessed with beauty, I was so happy to attend the International Beauty Show this weekend. The show is the top trade show for beauty professionals, and even though it's technically for beauty pros only, I had a blast getting an insider look at the hottest new product launches, beauty tools, and wholesale pricing on everything!

Check out my highlights from the show!

Studex Booth International Beauty Show.jpg

Studex At-Home Piercing Kit

Studex is the leading manufacturer of piercing instruments, studs and supplies. Even if you've never heard of them, you've definitely touched one of their products. I partnered with Studex and Brand Backer for complimentary tickets to the show. If you go, check out their assortment of stylish studs, and maybe get a new piercing! I got one and am absolutely in love! If you want to try piercing at home with your bestie, their Piercing Kits are available for purchase here. It comes with everything you need for a new earlobe or cartilage piercing, is allergy-free, and sterilzed! And they've got even more products available at Sally's!

Curls Cashmere and Caviar Collection Launch.jpg

Curls Cashmere & Caviar Collection

Since I'm wearing my natural curls again, I was so excited to see this launch! Coming out this summer, the Cashmere & Caviar Collection is a luxe new line that promises to strengthen, restructure, and add shine. All the products felt insanely rich and luxurious and smelled beautiful. Check out curls.biz for more info on the launch! I also stocked up on their Blissful Lengths Liquid Hair Growth Vitamin, so hoping to see some results as I start using it!

Touch Beauty Cosmetic Tools.jpg

Touch Beauty Tools

I'm a little bit behind when it comes to fancy, high tech skin care gadgets, so I stopped by the Touch Beauty booth to get the scoop. Touch Beauty creates a variety of devices, from eyelash curlers, so ultasonic facial scrubbers. Their Cream Booster deliveres positive or negative electrodes to refresh and detox the skin, as well as maximize the absorption of skin care products. The Contour Sculpting Roller massages the skin and can be used for face and body. While they are mostly trade only, they have a selection of products available on Amazon

The show is in town until March 6th, so if you can get a pass stop by!

Another season of NYFW is getting ready to kick off! I've always loved the energy of fashion week, and the huge concentration of creativity and style. Even before I started blogging, I was usually able to attend a few shows thanks to work or snagging invites from my friends in PR or editorial. This is the first season I'm getting invites in my own name and I can't even tell you how good that feels!

If you are still hustling to get your name on lists, or trying to find creative ways to slip past the iPad wielding fashion show gatekeepers, stay positive and persistent! And keep yourself busy with some of the many NYFW associated events that are open to the public.

All About Beautycon

As a die-hard beauty junkie, Beautycon is like a national holiday for me. I was so excited to attend the show, I started strategizing my look and schedule for the day weeks in advance! The day started with a custom makeover at Sephora, where I got this amazing makeup to go along with my unicorn inspired pink wig.

This is honestly one of my favorite beauty looks! I am living for the glitter eyeshadow, sculpted brows, and matte blush lip. And of course, the look wasn’t complete without some major lashes and the Violet Voss Eye Believe in Unicorns Trio fit the bill. I went with the fullest, most dramatic pair in the kit, because, as my MUA said, “go big or go home!”

I met up with my squad at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, where we spent the afternoon exploring the Beautycon activations, and of course taking advantage of the many colorful backdrops for pics and Boomerangs!

Beauty con Street Art Graphics

One of my favorite setups was by Milk Makeup, which had a live casting and photo shoots by Milk Studios photographers, all for the chance to be the next face of Milk. And Instagram favorite brand Pretty Little Thing was giving away a 2-piece lounge wear set if you signed up for emails. Though I didn’t wait in line to meet her, I saw the stunning Gabrielle Union doing interviews and press for her new, appropriately named line, Flawless. And a TON of Instagram and YouTube beauty stars were there, doing meet and greets with fans, and promoting their new lines or collaborations. There were also a lot of beauty brands I hadn’t heard of, so it was a great opportunity to learn about new products and beauty lines to try out. Overall it was a jam-packed fun filled day, and my shoulder is still aching from hauling around a bag of samples.

If you are in the LA area, the next event is in August, or next May back in NYC!
