16 Outfit Ideas You Need for Every Wedding This Season

Are you ready for wedding season?

I know I’m not the only one who is ECSTATIC to have a normal summer again. We have all been through so much in 2020, and it is such a relief to feel like things are finally getting back to normal. I went to a wedding a few weekends ago, and it was an insanely good time! Weddings will probably look pretty different this season, but the opportunity to step out in style will remain the same!

I rounded up some of my favorite wedding guest dresses for any type of occasion. Whether it’s a glam black tie affair or a boho wedding on the beach, you’re sure to be the best dressed guest! and the best part? Most of these are under $150!

Wedding Guest Outfit Ideas

Wedding Guest Dresses for a Black Tie Affair

I can’t resist a black-tie invite. Any opportunity to get in full glam is a win for me, especially if I also get to see my husband in a tux! A lot of people dread black-tie weddings because they tend to be more formal, and a black-tie dress code is going to be a lot more expensive than a casual affair.

But with some careful sleuthing you can still find a stunning black tie look for a great price. I’m obsessed with this sunset orange maxi dress, and you can never go wrong with a tuxedo inspired look. Or go classic in a black maxi, or fun and sexy with this 20’s inspired beaded dress. The most expensive one of these is still only $160, so what are you waiting for!

Wedding Guest Dresses for a Garden Party Wedding

Who doesn’t love a garden party!? There is a casual elegance that is hard to resist, and the comfort factor is key! Heels won’t be necessary, but a soft romantic dress definitely is. This is also the easiest dress code to decipher – just think sundress, sandals or wedges and a fun accessory, like a straw clutch or tasteful wide-brimmed hat (nothing that will be blocking people’s view of the ceremony please!).

I love this pink tiered ruffled number, and the green halter just screams lawn games and rose! And the best part? All of these garden party wedding dress ideas are all under $60!

Classic Wedding Guest Outfit Ideas

Classic wedding attire may seem the most boring, but at least it’s the most versatile. These are the kind of dresses you probably already have in your closet or if you don’t you’ve been meaning to buy. Think a classic black sheath dress, midi dress in a universally flattering color, and of course, a silk or satin evening gown. Simply can’t go wrong!

You might need to spend a little more for a classic wedding look, but you’ll be able to wear it for multiple occasions, and a timeless classic will never go out of style.

Wedding Guest Outfits for a Beach Wedding

Beach weddings are another favorite of mine. The setting can’t be beat and I love the relaxed, low-key vacation vibes. Keep that energy going in a flowing dress with flat sandals, and a sun hat in tow. You can wear any color from island green to baby blue, just keep the look relaxed and unfussy.

This subtle tie-dye maxi or lime green ruffle dress will have all eyes on you, or go more subdued in a summer ready black floral dress of classic blush dress with a tasteful cutout.

Which one of these is your fave? Let me know in the comments as well as how many weddings you plan to attend this season!

Engagement Shoot 101: How to Ace Your Engagement Photo Shoot

In case you missed the big reveal on Insta this week, I’M ENGAGED!

Engagement Proposal Photo Shoot Ideas
Engagement Photography Tips
Engagement Photo Shoot LA
LA Engagement Photo Shoot

It happened awhile ago, but we didn’t do any social media about it for the first few weeks. I’m still not going to go crazy posting about being engaged and planning a wedding, but of course will share some of the highlights. Especially when it comes to picking a dress! But for now I want to give you guys a few tips on one of my areas of expertise - photo shoots! Since I’ve been in fashion marketing in my day job and have been a blogger for years, I have a lot of experience planning them and being in front of the camera. Stay tuned for everything you need to know to nail your engagement session!

Engagement Shoot Photography Tips

Choosing the Right Photographer for The Engagement Photo Shoot

The first and most important decision you need to make is who is going to do the shoot! A lot of wedding photographers offer an engagement session as part of their package for wedding day coverage. If you are doing both your engagement shoot and wedding in the same city, and you already have a clear idea of the style you want for your wedding then a bundle is great! It will help you save money and ensure a consistent look and feel for your engagement and wedding photography.

SInce we live in LA but aren’t getting married here that wasn’t an option for us. We ended up using a photographer that I had previously worked with on blog content instead. I liked that it was someone I knew and already had a relationship with, however since she didn’t specialize in engagements, we ended up having some challenges. Initially I thought photographers may just overcharge for engagement photos because everything when it comes to weddings has elevated prices. But it really is a challenge shooting a couple and making sure there are plenty of images where both people look great. We actually had to redo our engagement shoot because the first round of photos really didn’t have that many shots that were flattering to us both! Second time was a charm and we were both way happier with the final content.

One of my friends who is getting married decided to just have one of the bridesmaids take the pics on her personal camera. It is definitely a feasible option, especially if you know someone who has a geat camera and you want to save money. Plus it makes it more fun and natural, just like you and your fiance hanging out with friends.

If you decide to go the pro route, I suggest working with someone that does have experience with engagements, weddings, or even family portraits. Anything that can show they are well versed in shooting groups of people, not just individuals. And allow yourself an hour to an hour and a half session, maybe even 2 hours if you are both new to being on camera!

What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

The second most important decision is what to wear for your engagement shoot! You and your fiance need to decide if you want a relaxed easy going vibe, or something more formal. We decided to go a little more dressy since that was reflective of both our styles and the tone we wanted to set for our wedding. Just make sure you will feel comfortable in whatever you are wearing and that the fit is flattering. While you don’t need to be matchy matchy (unless that is your preference) at least be sure your looks make sense together! You can’t be in a formal dress and him in shorts and t-shirt! Or if he wants to wear a suit instead of a casual look, then you need to step your game up so the images tell a consistent story. And if you are wearing heels definitely bring a pair of flats! You might find yourself walking around a bit looking for the perfect location, so you may want to have a pair of flats handy if you need to change shoes.

Start planning your looks a few weeks before the shoot, and give yourself time in case you run into shipping delays, fit issues or need to get things altered. And don’t forget to accessorize! I love the dresses I wore, but felt like the added accessories really brought the looks home. I also recommend keeping your makeup more classic. Now is not the time to try any crazy new trends!

Establish a Shot List and Share with Your Photographer

It’s pretty common to create a shot list for creative campaigns and weddings, so having one for your engagement shoot will only make things run smoother. This lets your photographer know every image you expect to be delivered so you won’t feel like things are missing at the end. Think about images that are important for you to have as memories, and also what you need from a practical standpoint. If you are doing a wedding website, check if there are recomended dimensions for the imagery and any other technical info the photographer would need. Since I don’t post my fiance on social media, I wanted to good selection of solo shots or ones where his face wasn’t visible. Think about what is important to you and use the below sample shot list for reference!

Engagement Shoot.png

Choosing a Location for Your Engagement Shoot

The location is the final factor, and just as important! Think about the kind of scenery you want and the story you want to tell. Maybe it’s a place that has significance for you as a couple, but it can also just be somewhere you think looks pretty and will work logistically speaking. We knew that we wanted something with an LA vibe, but not on the beach since we would be wearing formalwear. We originally tried to do Malibu for sunset, but the images didn’t work out. We ended up reshooting in Beverly Hills and the iconic palm tree scenery was just perfect. Wherever you decide to shoot, make sure you consider how traffic will be in the area and plan accordingly! I typically do most of my shoots early in the morning, when light is softer and streets are less crowded.

Also, have your photographer check any permit requirements that may be in place. A lot of places we thought about shooting required permits and threatened fines, and that is the last thing you want to deal with on an engagement shoot!

Hope these tips help! Pin this for future reference and if you want to see what I wore in our engagement shoot, shop the looks below! And keep following along for more of my wedding planning journey! We have been planning our big day for almost a year, but sadly had to postpone due to covid. It was devastating to have to postpone our dream wedding, but the travel restrictions for France just made it impossible!

How to Survive (and Actually Enjoy) Postponing Your Wedding

If you were a 2020 bride, it’s likely you have postponed your wedding due to coronavirus. Between the toll the virus has taken and the restrictions on group gatherings, weddings just weren’t possible in most cases. My husband and I were lucky enough to have a covid elopement and legally tie the knot. But our destination wedding in France has been postponed until next summer. Having a coronavirus wedding postponement was a bummer, but we had to prioritize our guest’s safety and ability to travel with ease. My destination wedding planner made rescheduling the wedding weekend as easy as possible, and I definitely learned a lot in the process. Here are my tips for postponing your wedding due to coronavirus (or really for any reason).

How to Postpone Your Wedding

Stay Open Minded and Flexible

We have some other pretty big commitments lined up for next Spring and Summer, so finding a new date was tricky. While Friday and Saturday weddings are more traditional, we ended up having to settle on a mid-week date. Summer is peak wedding season, and you aren’t just competing with 2021 brides, but with all the 2020 brides that had to reschedule their weddings! While you may have had your heart set on a particular date, staying flexible will make the postponing process so much easier. Our priority was finding a date that worked for all our vendors so we wouldn’t lose our deposits. If you are having scheduling conflicts between vendors, prioritize the ones you can’t live without or paid the largest nonrefundable deposit to.  Let the rest of the chips fall where they may!

Just note – if you have to pick a day or time that may be less convenient for guests, think of extra things you can do to give them a better experience. Consider a big welcome cocktail, after-wedding brunch, or organizing a local activity.

Take Your Time Finding Your Perfect Wedding Dress

Everyone spends months trying to figure out what to wear to a wedding. Your wedding dress is one of the most important elements of the big day. If you felt rushed choosing a dress or are feeling less enthusiastic about saying yes to the dress, here’s your chance to fix that! Stores may be opening soon and you’ll have a fresh new bridal collection to choose from. Or you can turn to custom wedding dress designer, Anomalie, for a fully custom gown. I got my wedding dress online with Anomalie and it was an amazing experience.

If you are still in love with your dress, complete your bridal look with the right shoes and accessories. If your new wedding date is in a different season than you originally planned, you may want to think of ways to tweak your look.

Stress free Wedding Planning Tips.JPG

Enjoy Having More Time to Plan Your Wedding

Wedding planning can be stressful, to say the least. Even under normal circumstances, figuring out how to plan a wedding takes a huge amount of time, energy and money. Not to mention all the pre-wedding events you may have had to cancel! Having a few extra months to plan will help ease the stress of the planning process, give you more time to research vendors if you haven’t fully committed, and rethink tiny details that will make or break your day. Just do yourself a favor and spend less time on Pinterest! You don’t want to fall into a wedding planning rabbit hole and end up rethinking all your plans. If you have one, work with your wedding coordinator or wedding event planner to finalize details. If you haven’t enlisted a pro, see if anyone in your bridal party or your friends and family want to chip in to assist.

And if you didn’t already (or just want a do-over!) plan yourself a kick ass bachelorette trip! Whether with your bridal party and friends, or a solo vacation so you can practice self-care, plan a fun and refreshing weekend before the big day.

Take the Opportunity to Manage Your Wedding Budget

One more advantage of a wedding postponement – getting the chance to save more money! Weddings are expensive; figuring out how to pay for your wedding is one of the biggest stressors. Should your parents help pay for your wedding? That really all depends on your and your families circumstances. In our case, we are paying for everything on our own. As disappointed as we were to have to postpone, it does take a pretty big financial burden off our shoulders this year.

If you’ve been going crazy over wedding related expenses, give yourself a breather. Coronavirus has had a huge impact on the economy and everyone’s financial situation, so take the opportunity to reset and rethink your budget. If you need to cut wedding costs to save money, go ahead! If you are able to save up and feeling more flush, you may even want to spend more! If you are increasing your budget, think of something worth it to splurge on. That may be fancier flowers, a signature cocktail, or supplementing travel costs for some of your guests.

Beauty Tips for African American Brides.JPG

And remember – use the time to practice self-care!

2020 has been pretty tough. You may still be reeling from the pandemic and its devastating effects. If wedding planning has been stressful for you, take a break from it! Postponing will give you time to put your wedding plans on pause and pick them up when you are ready. If you have one, your event planner or event coordinator can let you know when it’s time to get back into action. If you are planning your wedding on your own or having a DIY wedding, set up a to do list and reminders on your calendar. Just make sure you are taking care of you!

Bridal Styling 101 - How to Complete Your Wedding Day Look Like a Pro!

I’m counting down until my big day! I’ve been posting a bit here and there about my wedding planning journey, but have not covered much on the most important subject - THE DRESS! That will be coming up soon enough don’t worry. Before I share more about my dress shopping journey and how I finally said yes to the dress, I wanted to dive into more about completing your bridal look. Obviously, the dress is a major, but the accessories, shoes, hair and makeup all tie the final look together! To get the scoop on how to best complete your bridal look, I interviewed one of Savannah’s leading stylists Charisse Bruin! Stay tuned for how bridal styling comes into play and everything you need to know to look perfect on your wedding day, from shoes to shapewear!

So, what exactly is a bridal stylist?

A bridal stylist’s job can vary depending on the bride's needs and wants. Planning a wedding is very stressful, but everyone has their opinion on what you, the bride should do. I like to tell my brides, I am the stylist and your bridesmaids help you with the wedding planning! Friends can be harsh at times and may not know what silhouette is most flattering or how to properly style the entirety of a look. I help bring the style together, in a professional manner. I also help with any last-minute style emergencies, such as fixing a hem or bustling a gown so you can dance the night away. Having a bridal stylist helps eliminate the chaos and allows your bridal party and friends to have fun, while I sweat the small stuff!

What should brides know about shopping for bridal accessories?

Brides shouldn't limit themselves to diamonds!!!! There are so many options such as amethyst, pearls, chalcedony, crocheted gold, just to name a FEW! Mix natural stones and crystals in your bands, bracelets or headpiece, but remember in doing so, keep it simple. Use clusters of small stones or one big statement; never do both!

How do you balance between complementing the dress and overshadowing it?

Brides should pick a style or theme and stick to it! Mixing themes and periods (i.e. Bohemian and Renaissance) can clash. If one theme is relaxed and free-spirited, that wouldn't pair well with a structured gown and dark, vampy makeup. Everything should flow, effortlessly. When accessories, hair and makeup are overdone, the look can be a little gaudy and overshadow the bride’s natural beauty.

What are some of your favorite bridal trends?

I honestly don't like bridal trends! I love bridal themes and stories that can be created from the personalities of the couple. If the bride is sophisticated and regal, a simple structured trumpet gown with minimal makeup and simple hair is a statement and defines the bride’s character. The same for an eclectic gal! She can wear a boho lace gown and pair it with accessories that define her personality. The style should reflect the character of the bride or who/what she wants to portray.

2020-BRIDAL-TRENDS

Let's talk shapewear! Is it essential for the big day and how do you decide what you need?

YES!!! Shapewear is a non-negotiable for formal and bridal wear. It accentuates your silhouette and makes you look the most flattering in photos. Two huge expenses for any wedding are the dress and the photography.  Shapewear helps make sure the bride looks flawless in the dress, in person and in the photos!  When shopping for shapewear, keep in mind the shape and cut-outs of the garment. Your gown may be backless, strapless or have a thigh-high slit. Shapewear comes in a plethora of sizes and shapes for many silhouettes and gown styles. You can go old school with a corset to snatch your waist or something as simple as garment tape to lift and tighten your breast if your dress is backless or plunging. There's something for everyone!

Any style tips for the grooms to be?

Yes, lots. Guys should want to stand out themselves, but they'll almost be sure to never outshine the bride! She is the main event!  The most important detail and selection for grooms will be to have a customized/tailored suit; it will make all the difference! Guys can show off their personal style by wearing fun accessories, such as colorful socks or personalized cuffs. Lastly, to avoid excessive shirt tucking, grooms have a pretty good selection on types of "shirt stays" that can attach to briefs, socks, magnetized and more!

What are your secrets for finding affordable bridal gowns and accessories?

There are several options to cut costs of gowns. The most expensive gowns are custom; if it's not in your budget, avoid boutiques that sell or make only custom gowns. Brides can also rent gowns! If you don't want the gown as a keepsake, there is no shame in renting a gown.  Brides can also find affordable accessories at large retailers such as Dillard’s or Macy's or have something personalized by an Etsy shop owner. You can also incorporate family jewels, if mom or grandma has something special. The options are endless!

What do the bride and groom need to know to ace their wedding photo shoot?

The couple should absolutely rely on the fact that they've hired a competent and trusty photographer. A great photographer can work around a couple being themselves and having fun, capturing the best candids! They will also know how to direct the couple and utilize the garments and accessories to add depth, detail and shadows to the shot. Confidence in the photographer selection and confidence in being themselves, crazy in love!

The Most Stylish and Affordable Outfits for Every Bridal Shower

I am coming off the weekend of the best bridal shower ever! My bridesmaids really showed off and showed out and made winter wonderland magic. I shared a ton of the content on my Instagram, so check out my wedding highlight in case you missed the fun.

Since we are officially in the middle of engagement season, you may find yourself planning a bridal shower of your own pretty soon. I spent weeks trying to figure out what to wear for my bridal shower, before settling on the perfect little white dress. In my case deciding what to wear to a bridal shower was extra challenging because I didn’t know any of the details! Bridal shower attire can range widely depending on the theme, location, time of year, and level of formality. All I knew about mine was that it would be in NYC in January. I started to think about winter white sweaters and cozy looks, but decided to keep my bridal shower fashion sexier and more glam! I wanted to have fun and wear something that would stand out and not have my dream look ruined by the weather. So, I decided to brave the New York winter weather and rock my dream bridal dress ! That’s what taxi rides are for anyway right?

If you have a bridal shower coming up and can’t decide what to wear, keep reading for my favorite bridal shower outfit ideas, all under $200. There are plenty of outfits I considered wearing before settling on my final look and other looks I love from my favorite affordable retailers. From cocktail dresses to 2-piece suits, get ready to shop for the perfect bridal shower look for any theme!

Bridal Jumpsuits for Weddings and Bridal Showers

bridal-jumpsuits-modern-bride

Jumpsuits are having a moment, especially for brides to be! They can be fun, edgy, sexy or timeless. I fell in love with this wide leg lace top version from Pretty Little Thing, and the strapless bustier style from Lulus. Both had super flattering wide leg bottoms made from a thick material to keep from being see-through. The result was a flattering fit that slimmed my legs and didn’t reveal any undergarments. Satin is also great for an evening or more formal bridal shower, and I was obsessed with this version from Shop Red Dress. It’s been in and out of stock, so sign up for the wait list if you want to try to get it when it’s back in stock.

Little White Dresses for Wedding Events

White Bridal Mini Dress
White Eyelet Midi Dress

A little white dress will always be a classic! Since my bridal shower was in the evening and I felt like it was going in the direction of a more glam theme, I decided to go for a sexy cocktail vibe. This satin puff sleeve mini dress from Lulus fit the bill perfectly. It highlighted my curves but the oversized puff sleeves balanced out the sexiness and made it more fashion forward. I also fell in love with this little mini dress from Shop Red Dress since the embellishments reminded me of snowflakes. I thought it would be great for the winter themed bridal shower!

2 Piece Sets and Suiting for Brides

Sequined Bridal Tuxedo

If you want to go even more unconventional, why not a 2-piece set or suit? This white sequined tuxedo from Asos is incredibly unique and will have all eyes on you! If head to toe sequins doesn’t sound like your style, there are plenty of 2-piece skirts sets that are perfect for someone who is more of a classic bride.

5 Annoying Things That Happen When You Get Engaged

So I recently announced our engagement and couldn’t be happier! I am in the midst of planning the wedding of my dreams with the man of my dreams and pretty much feeling like the luckiest girl in the world. But I can’t help but notice a few annoying patterns of behavior that have come up since we really got into the planning process. I know I’m not the only bride to be that has dealt with her fair share of drama, judgement and guilt, so read on for 5 of the most annoying things that I’ve encountered in the planning process and how to handle them!

What to Expect When You Get Engaged

People Suddenly Get Nicer When You are Introduced as Fiancee

Obviously, people are happy and congratulatory when they find out you just got engaged. That is totally normal and welcome! However, I did notice that people were generally just nicer to me when he introduced me as his fiancée vs his girlfriend. I kind of thought it was in my head the first few weeks, but I happened to find several articles and YouTube videos from other women, particularly black women, discussing this phenomenon. It’s almost as if your relationship has suddenly been legitimized by a piece of jewelry. This is just one of those things you have to grin and bear. No one means any harm and you can’t call anyone out for being nice and happy without looking crazy.

The Sudden Increase in Pregnancy Related Questions

Once there’s a ring on it, interest turns very quickly from your wedding to your future reproductive plans! Again, most people mean well and are generally very excited for you, but I find questions or comments about when I’m having a baby inappropriate and offensive. I generally try to be aware of how difficult having a child can be for many couples, so I avoid bringing it up, but most people don’t think that way.  You never know if the couple wants kids, is struggling with infertility, has suffered miscarriages or anything of the sort, and putting someone on the spot in that way can be very difficult and emotional for them. And on another note, if you happen to be in an interracial relationship, get ready for all the commentary on how cute your future baby will be. It’s annoying, gross, rooted in anti-blackness but unfortunately way too common. Depending on who is asking and how invasive or persistent they are, I will either ignore the commentary/questions or flat out tell them to stay out of my uterus. Putting it in clinical terms is pretty effective at getting people to shut up and change the subject.

The Reaction to Name-Changing or Not

People started asking me what my new name was going to be pretty much as soon as our engagement became public.  I still haven’t decided if I’m going to change it, hyphenate, or just stay plain old Kelly and I am not rushing to decide. However, even in 2019 people still think that’s a very strange decision to make. I have been told I have to take his name or at least hyphenate, and had others actually question my commitment because I am attached to my own identity. Plus, back to my above point about nosy people in my uterus, there is plenty of concern about how confusing it will be for my future kids.  This decision is a personal one that no one can make but you, so you need to do what you think is best and feel most comfortable with. The rest can fall into place!

The Judgement Over Your Wedding Plans

People will think they have a right to weigh in on anything when it comes to your wedding. From where it is, to what date, to how much you are spending to who is invited, get ready for the floodgates to open! My fiancé and I are doing an international destination wedding and the reactions are pretty extreme. People are either super excited about the travel or disappointed we didn’t do something locally. Guest list decisions can also be tough! Weddings can be outlandishly expensive and the single biggest cost driver behind them is the guest list. The more people that attend, the more your costs increase at every level, from food to rentals to staff. If you can’t afford or don’t want a huge affair, you will have to be ruthless about headcount and deal with the backlash. And trust me, there will be very loud and clear backlash! Try to take it in stride and stay positive, and remember – the thing that matters most is your marriage not the wedding plans!

 The Bridal Party Politics

This has been another sticky issue for me, and I know I’m not alone. We’ve had so many debates about whether or not to even have a bridal party, how big they should be, and if they have to be even. We decided to keep it pretty tiny for several reasons, and that has definitely caused some tension. Every bride I’ve ever met has gone through the same thing, so I know I’m in good company. It’s just one of those things where you can’t make everyone happy. Plus it’s also tradition that you include a close female relative of the groom, or vice versa, to represent families coming together.  The factors I considered were my current relationships with each person, how I thought the group dynamics would play out, and what might be going on in my friends lives at the time (financial challenges, starting a family, planning a wedding of their own etc). While it is an honor to be in someone’s wedding, it is also an obligation that includes time, money, and vacation days. I tried to consider factors that would have made it harder for some to effectively participate in the wedding and also who had things going on in their lives that I did not want to distract from. Unfortunately, several people had already made assumptions that they would be bridesmaids and were flying with the bridal party plans before I had even made up my mind. Others didn’t like my thought process behind how I put my bridal party together or thought I should have extended invitations anyway, to be nice. Doing things for the sake of being nice will always add up to be a losing game, so stick to your guns and do what is best for you and your fiancé. It will be hard because you know that you may end up disappointing some of your close friends, but this is not a situation where you can make everyone happy.

There will be many more annoyances you encounter on the wedding planning journey so keep your head up and remember the thing that matters the most - marrying the love of your life! Nothing tops that so remember the end game when people start to work your last damn nerve!

As I’ve gotten older Summer has basically become an endless stream of wedding, engagement and bachelorette parties that take over your summer weekends. Every event demands a stylish new look, so keeping it fresh can be a challenge. So when I saw this unique printed dress I knew it would be the perfect look for my upcoming social schedule. It’s fitted like a bodycon dress without being too tight or inappropriate, and I love that it’s glamourous, sexy, but unfussy. This is from Clover Canyon, one of my fave designers. I got it from Rent the Runway, but you can find their unique printed clothing everywhere from Shopbop to Yoox.

Armed with elegant sandals in a bold hue, I’m ready to slay any wedding related event the season can throw at me. So next time you are in a dressing rut, think about a super flattering silhouette, eye-catching print, and classic accessories and makeup to finish the look.

What are your tips for slaying wedding season? Let me know in the comments!
