The Perfect Charlottesville Weekend Itinerary: Wineries and a Cozy Inn Stay

Sometimes you just need a low-key escape to relax, recharge, and focus on wellness. I just had the perfect weekend escape and after you read this post, you will be booking one for yourself! If you’re craving a change of pace without the hassle of a long flight, Charlottesville, Virginia is one of the best weekend getaways from the DMV. Just over two hours away, this charming town offers the perfect mix of history, wine country, scenic views, and cozy accommodations—making it ideal for a quick but memorable escape.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a solo reset, or a laid-back girls’ trip, Charlottesville delivers. Here’s exactly why it should be at the top of your list—and how to plan the perfect trip.

The Perfect Charlottesville Weekend Itinerary

Why Charlottesville is a Must-Visit from the DMV

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville combines small-town charm with elevated experiences. You’ll find:

  • Award-winning wineries

  • Historic landmarks

  • A vibrant food scene

  • Beautiful countryside views

And the best part? You can leave DC after work on a Friday and be sipping wine by sunset.

Where to Stay: A Charming Escape at Crossroads Inn

If you want your weekend to truly feel like an escape, skip the standard, boring hotel and book a stay at the Crossroads Inn.

This historic inn, established in 1820, is a hidden gem with just six rooms—perfect for travelers who want a quiet, intimate experience. From the moment you arrive, you feel the slower pace. The property is peaceful, surrounded by greenery, and designed for relaxation. The Crossroads Inn team hosted me for the weekend and it was just the stay I needed.

So what are the things that make this bed and breakfast so special? The rooms are cozy and thoughtfully designed rooms that feel personal rather than commercial. There are no TVs in most rooms, encouraging you to unplug and actually unwind and the atmosphere is quiet and intimate, perfect for a romantic couple’s weekend or relaxing solo stay.

Mornings here feel especially calm—think coffee, fresh air, and no rush to be anywhere. It’s the kind of place where you can truly reset, which is exactly what most of us need after a busy week in the DMV.

It’s also near wineries, historic sites, and downtown, making it the perfect base for exploring.

Things to Do in Charlottesville

If you can peel yourself away from this charming property, here are somethings you can’t miss in the area.

Step Back in Time at Monticello

No trip to Charlottesville is complete without visiting Monticello, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Set on a hilltop with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, Monticello offers a deeper look into early American history, architecture, and the complexities of Jefferson’s legacy. Guided tours walk you through the home and grounds, while exhibits provide important context about the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked there.

Reservations are required for a guided tour inside the house, and they are worth it for the rich historical insight. If you don’t book a tour, you can still enjoy the stunning panoramic views and beautiful gardens and walking paths

Plan to spend at least a few hours here—it’s both educational and visually stunning.

Sip Wine with a View at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

I’m never getting over Virginia wine country, and Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards is easily one of the most picturesque wineries in the region.

The team hosted me for a gorgeous lunch and wine tasting and it was the highlight of my weekend! From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with rolling hills, mountain views, and a beautifully designed tasting room that feels both upscale and welcoming. Enjoy a curated wine list featuring local varietals, paired with a farm-to-table food menu that pairs perfectly with your tasting. Plus the views are stunning, with one of the best sunsets you’ll see!

It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to linger—order a glass, take in the scenery, and let the afternoon stretch into evening.

Reservations for the tasting room are recommended, but you can also walk in and enjoy food and wine on the lawn. Be sure to check out their events calendar for farm-table cooking classes and crafts like floral arrangements and wreath making.

Explore Downtown Charlottesville

Downtown Charlottesville is lively but not overwhelming, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll. The historic pedestrian mall is lined with charming boutique shops, local restaurants, and coffee spots and wine bars

It’s a great place to spend a slow afternoon or grab dinner after a day of exploring. Be sure to visit Blue Whale Books for an impressive collection of rare books and world maps.

Take in the Blue Ridge Views

If you have time, take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway or explore nearby hiking trails. Even a short drive offers incredible views, especially in the fall when the foliage is at its peak.

Just don’t do this the same day as your wine tasting!

Save the itinerary below for your trip!

The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Friday Evening

  • Arrive from the DMV

  • Check into Crossroads Inn

  • Enjoy a quiet evening and unwind

Saturday

  • Morning: Visit Monticello

  • Afternoon: Wine tasting at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

  • Evening: Dinner in downtown Charlottesville

Sunday

  • Slow morning at the inn

  • Coffee + a walk around the property

  • Head back to the DMV feeling recharged

Final Thoughts on Your Charlottesville Weekend Itinerary

Charlottesville is the kind of destination that feels far away without actually being far at all. It offers just enough to do without feeling rushed—and just enough quiet to help you truly reset.

From the historic beauty of Monticello to the scenic charm of Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards, and the peaceful stay at Crossroads Inn, it’s a weekend escape that checks every box.

If you’ve been searching for an easy getaway from DC, consider this your sign.

This is Your Guide to Be a Digital Nomad in 2026!

I’m writing this post while on a train back home after a mid-week escape, where I was able to plug in and work comfortably without tracking PTO. That is the ultimate perk and privilege of remote work. And while I’ve lived in 3 different countries, I didn’t always have a fully remote job, but now that I do, its changing the way that I travel.

In 2026, being a digital nomad isn’t a trend — it’s a lifestyle. While fully remote jobs are still increasingly competitive, there is far more global investment in infrastructure, programs, and visa schemes designed to cater to the digital nomad population. While the dream looks effortless on Instagram, building a sustainable nomadic life requires strategy, planning, and the right tools.

Here’s your complete guide to becoming a digital nomad in 2026 — including the easiest destinations, current visa options, and how to find temporary housing that actually works for remote professionals.

This is Your Guide to Be a Digital Nomad in 2026!

Step 1: Make Sure Your Income Is Location-Independent

Before booking a one-way ticket, secure consistent remote income. In 2026, the most common digital nomad careers include:

  • Freelance writing, marketing, and design

  • UGC content creation and influencer work

  • Remote tech roles (engineering, UX, product)

  • Consulting and coaching

  • Virtual assistance and operations management

  • E-commerce and digital products

Ideally, you’ll want 3–6 months of living expenses saved before moving abroad. Income requirements for most digital nomad visas range from $1,500–$4,000 per month, so stable proof of earnings is critical.

Step 2: Choose the Right Destination

Some countries make it incredibly easy for remote workers to live legally for extended periods. Here are some of the easiest digital nomad-friendly destinations in 2026:

Portugal

Portugal remains one of the most popular options thanks to its D8 Digital Nomad Visa. With great infrastructure, strong expat communities in Lisbon and Porto, and access to the Schengen Zone, it’s ideal for first-time nomads.

Mexico

Offering geographical proximity and diverse cultural experiences, Mexico has become an increasingly attractive option for expats and nomads, particularly those seeking a more relaxed lifestyle and affordable living. It’s also close enough to the U.S, so easy to go back and forth to visit family or have them come out to see you.

Colombia

Known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and relatively affordable cost of living, Colombia has been gaining traction as a destination for expats and digital nomads seeking a dynamic and welcoming environment. A lower cost of living than the U.S., with opportunities in tourism, agriculture, and emerging tech sectors. Cities like Medellín and Bogotá are becoming hubs for digital nomads.

Honduras

Honduras, especially the stunning island of Roatan, is an emerging destination for digital nomads seeking a blend of Caribbean island life and remote work functionality. The country is slowly investing in more of the infrastructure and lifestyle elements to attract more remote workers, making it a top choice for digital nomads that prioritize a slower pace of life and being surrounded by natural beauty.

Step 3: Choose Smarter Housing (Not Just Cheap Housing)

Housing will be your largest monthly expense — and your biggest quality-of-life factor.

Many first-time digital nomads default to Airbnb because it’s familiar. But for longer stays (30+ days), platforms like Blueground are often a better fit.

Blueground specializes in fully furnished, move-in-ready apartments designed specifically for extended stays. Instead of negotiating with individual hosts, you book a professionally managed apartment with flexible lease terms — often starting at 30 days. Utilities, WiFi, furniture, kitchen essentials, and linens are included. For remote workers, that means no setting up internet accounts, no buying dishes, and no surprises at move-in. You simply arrive and start working.

Compared to Airbnb, Blueground offers more consistency and stability. Airbnb listings can vary widely in quality, cleanliness, and host responsiveness. Blueground apartments are standardized, professionally maintained, and typically located in central, desirable neighborhoods. They also offer digital tools for lease management and support requests, which makes it easier to handle maintenance issues without language barriers or awkward messaging. For digital nomads staying multiple months in cities like New York, Lisbon, or Dubai, the reliability and predictability often outweigh the slightly higher upfront cost.

If you want to book a Blueground for your next nomad or travel experience, use my discount code bgwhereismalikah to get $15 off your less than 1 month bookings, $75 off your less than 6 month bookings and $100 off your 6 month or longer bookings!

Step 4: Build Community (or You’ll Burn Out)

The freedom of being a digital nomad can quickly turn into isolation if you’re not intentional. In 2026, there are more nomad communities than ever:

  • Coworking spaces

  • WhatsApp and Slack expat groups

  • Meetup events

  • Facebook nomad groups

  • Coliving spaces

Even scheduling one social activity per week can dramatically improve your experience abroad.

Step 5: Create a Sustainable Travel Rhythm

Not every nomad moves every month. In fact, slower travel is becoming the norm in 2026. Staying 2–3 months in one city allows you to:

  • Qualify for better housing rates

  • Establish routine

  • Avoid burnout

  • Get to really know a city

  • Build deeper connections

Fast travel looks exciting online, but slow travel is what makes the lifestyle sustainable.

Final Thoughts: Is Digital Nomad Life Worth It in 2026?

Yes — if you plan it strategically.

Being a digital nomad today isn’t about running away from structure. It’s about creating your own structure across borders. The most successful nomads treat it like a business decision: they choose visa-friendly countries, secure stable housing, maintain savings, and build community intentionally.

If you focus on legal residency, consistent income, smart housing (like Blueground-style furnished apartments for longer stays), and realistic budgeting, you can build a life that combines career growth with global freedom.

The dream isn’t just traveling.

It’s designing a life that works anywhere.

Discover Culpeper, Virginia: A Hidden Gem for Your Next Weekend Getaway

After over 2 years hopping around Asia, I’m finally back in the US for a bit! I’m looking forward to catching up on quality time with friends and family and of course, local travel to some cute small towns. Of course, country hopping in Asia is incredible, and I’m so lucky to have been able to experience places like Thailand, Tokyo and Hong Kong! But when you travel like that for so long, I think what I’ve been missing is the small town local charm.

I had the chance to partner with Visit Culpeper to explore the charming town that is the perfect weekend escape from D.C. Just 90 minutes from the bustle of the city, Culpeper, Virginia feels like stepping into another world — one where life slows down, history whispers from red-brick streets, and every corner hides a cozy café or charming boutique waiting to be explored.

This small town just a short distance from Shenandoah National Park is one of those places that surprises you — not because it’s flashy or famous, but because of how effortlessly it blends authentic Virginia charm with a growing creative and culinary scene. Whether you’re here for a romantic getaway, a wine weekend with friends, or a peaceful solo retreat, Culpeper delivers big on character, food, and relaxation.

Discover Culpeper, Virginia: A Hidden Gem for Your Next Weekend Getaway

Why You’ll Fall in Love with Culpeper, VA

What makes Culpeper so special? It’s the kind of town where you can stroll from a historic street art celebrating African-American history to a trendy coffee and cocktail shop in just a few blocks. You’ll find chef-driven restaurants tucked inside 19th-century buildings, local artisans selling hand-poured candles and plants, and welcoming locals who are genuinely proud of their hometown.

Plus, its location couldn’t be more convenient:
âś… Less than two hours from D.C.
âś… Surrounded by Shenandoah hiking trails
✅ Minutes from Virginia’s top wineries and breweries
âś… Home to charming B&Bs and boutique stays

Culpeper is the perfect balance of small-town soul and modern-day comfort.

Where to Stay in Culpeper

There are lots of great options in and around Culpeper, but if you want to stay downtown and be walking distance to everything, the best options are Suites at 249 boutique hotel or an Airbnb. I was hosted at Botanical Oasis, a stylish 2 bedroom property managed by Let’s Go & Stay, a local rental platform that curates stylish and unique accommodations in the area. The place was stylishly decorated and had all the essentials for a comfortable and cozy stay.

Culpeper, VA for Foodies: Where to Eat & Drink

Culpeper might be small, but its food scene is mighty. The town has quietly become a culinary destination in Virginia, blending Southern hospitality with creative, global flavors.

Start your day at Raven’s Nest Coffee House

This cozy café is a local favorite, serving craft espresso, teas, and house-made pastries. Their honey lavender latte is a must-try — and if the weather’s nice, grab a seat outside to soak up the charming Main Street views. Right now they also have a seasonal cocktail menu, with Fall flavors like the apple cider mimosa and pumpkin spice martini!

Lunch at Miss Minerva’s Tea Room

Step back in time for afternoon tea at this delightful spot filled with vintage charm. Whether you go for their signature tea service or a light lunch of quiche and scones, Miss Minerva’s feels like a warm hug from the past.

Dinner at Pinto Thai Culpeper

When the craving for something flavorful hits, Pinto Thai delivers. The pad see ew and green curry are local favorites — and you’ll quickly see why this restaurant is beloved by both visitors and locals.

Wine Tastings at Vinosity

Culpeper sits in the heart of Virginia wine country, making it an ideal base for vineyard-hopping weekends. But you can sample some amazing local and international wines without leaving Downtown Culpeper. We stopped at Vinosity for a free wine tasting and ended up picking up a bottle, some cheese, and a handful of homemade salted caramels that were AMAZING!

Shop Local: Boutiques & Finds You’ll Want to Take Home

One of the best parts of exploring small towns is discovering local shops that feel one-of-a-kind. Culpeper’s downtown is filled with them — and I found a few gems you absolutely can’t miss.

Botanical Dwellings – A dreamy home and plant shop that feels like stepping into a Pinterest board. You’ll find everything from chic home décor to wellness products and gift items.

Fulton Moto – A lifestyle and motorcycle-inspired boutique with vintage charm. They carry high-quality apparel, leather goods, and accessories that blend classic style with rugged adventure vibes.

Every shop I visited had that small-town personal touch — the owners chatting with customers, sharing local tips, and genuinely excited to see visitors exploring their town.

Relax & Recharge: Wellness in Culpeper

If relaxation is part of your weekend escape, Culpeper’s wellness scene has you covered.

Collage Spa offers a full range of spa treatments — from deep-tissue massages to custom facials — perfect after a long day of exploring.

Culpeper Yoga Shala & Spa combines wellness with community, offering yoga, Pilates, spa/wellness treatments in one convenient location.

After a visit, you’ll leave feeling refreshed, restored, and ready to take on your next adventure.

Adventure Awaits: Explore the Outdoors

Culpeper’s location makes it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. The town is surrounded by natural beauty — rolling hills, rivers, and easy access to Shenandoah National Park.

Take a morning hike, drive the scenic Skyline Drive, or pack a picnic and head to Lake Pelham for kayaking and fishing. And if you’re visiting in fall, the foliage views are absolutely breathtaking.

Whether you’re here for the food, the shops, the wine, or just some quiet time in nature, Culpeper has a way of making you feel instantly at home.

Is it Safe for Americans to Travel Abroad Right Now? Your 2025 Guide

The world is calling! From the bustling souks of Marrakech to the serene temples of Kyoto, the allure of international travel is undeniable. But as an American, a question often lingers in the back of our minds: "Is it truly safe for me to travel abroad right now?" In an ever-evolving global landscape, this is a valid and important concern for any responsible traveler, but especially now that global travel advisories are getting more serious and travel related incidents are on the rise.

As a travel blogger who frequently navigates international borders, I understand this apprehension. The news cycles can be overwhelming, painting a picture that might deter even the most seasoned adventurer. But let's be clear: while risks exist everywhere, the vast majority of international travel for Americans remains safe and incredibly rewarding. This travel safety guide for Americans will help you cut through the noise, understand the real picture in 2025, and equip you with the knowledge to travel confidently and securely.

Is it Safe for Americans to Travel Abroad Right Now? Your 2025 Guide

Key Considerations for Safe Travel

Navigating international travel safely is less about avoiding it entirely and more about being informed and prepared. Here’s what you need to know:

This is your single most important resource. The U.S. Department of State  issues Travel Advisories for every country in the world, ranging from Level 1 ("Exercise Normal Precautions") to Level 4 ("Do Not Travel"). These advisories are frequently updated and provide specific details on risks like crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health concerns, and natural disasters.

  • How to Use It: Before you even book a flight, check the advisory level for your intended destination. Don't just look at the overall level; read the detailed breakdown for specific regions or types of risks within the country. A Level 2 "Exercise Increased Caution” for a large country might only apply to specific border regions or neighborhoods, leaving the main tourist areas perfectly safe.. This is especially important for your travel insurance, since policies can deny coverage if you decide to go on a trip in an area deemed unsafe, so read the fine print and know what you’re getting yourself info.

  • Sign up for STEP: The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is absolutely vital. By enrolling your trip details, the local U.S. embassy or consulate can reach you in an emergency (natural disaster, civil unrest, personal crisis) and provide important safety information. It's free and takes minutes.

Understanding Global Risks & Staying Informed

It's natural to feel uneasy given global headlines, but context is key.

  • Petty Crime: This is arguably the most common risk for travelers worldwide. Pickpocketing, bag snatching, and scams can happen anywhere, from Rome to Rio. Being aware of your surroundings, securing valuables, and avoiding flashy displays of wealth are universal precautions.

  • Political Climate & Demonstrations: In some regions, political demonstrations or civil unrest can occur. While most are peaceful, they can escalate. Always monitor local news, avoid large gatherings, and be aware of your exit routes. The U.S. Embassy often issues alerts if significant demonstrations are anticipated.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: While not a "safety risk" in the traditional sense, understanding and respecting local customs, dress codes, and social norms can significantly enhance your experience and help you blend in, reducing unwanted attention.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance is Non-Negotiable

Your domestic health insurance likely won't cover you abroad. This is where international travel insurance for Americans becomes absolutely crucial.

  • Emergency Medical Coverage: This is paramount. Unexpected illness or injury abroad can lead to astronomical medical bills. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical treatment and, critically, emergency medical evacuation (transport to a suitable medical facility, or even back to the U.S. if necessary). Look for at least $50,000 in emergency medical and $100,000 in evacuation coverage.

  • Trip Protection: Beyond medical, consider coverage for trip cancellation, interruption, delays, and lost or delayed baggage. These coverages protect your financial investment in your trip.

  • Compare Plans: Use comparison sites like InsureMyTrip to find a policy that fits your specific needs and itinerary. Companies like World Nomads, Allianz, and Seven Corners are popular choices for Americans.

4. Financial Security Abroad: Protecting Your Money

Beyond health and safety, securing your finances is a key part of global travel safety tips for Americans.

  • Notify Your Bank and Credit Card Companies: Before you leave, inform them of your travel dates and destinations to prevent fraud alerts and card freezes.

  • Multiple Payment Methods: Carry a combination of credit cards, a debit card, and some local currency. Keep them in separate, secure locations.

  • ATM Usage: Withdraw cash from ATMs located inside banks or reputable establishments. Avoid standalone ATMs in secluded areas.

  • Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion: When paying with a credit card abroad, always choose to be charged in the local currency, not USD. This often gives you a better exchange rate.

  • No Street Exchange: Never exchange currency with individuals on the street. Use reputable banks or official exchange bureaus.

5. Personal Preparedness: Empowering Your Journey

Your own actions are a huge factor in your safety.

  • Share Your Itinerary: Leave a copy of your itinerary, passport details, and insurance information with a trusted family member or friend back home.

  • Digital Copies: Keep digital copies of your passport, visa, flight confirmations, and insurance policy on your phone and in a cloud service.

  • Blend In: While you don't need to change who you are, avoid overtly flashy clothing or behavior that might draw unwanted attention.

  • Situational Awareness: Pay attention to your surroundings. Trust your gut feeling. If a situation feels off, remove yourself from it.

  • Local Laws and Customs: Research and respect the local laws and cultural norms, no matter how different they are from your own. Ignorance is rarely an excuse.

So, is it safe for Americans to travel abroad right now? My answer is a resounding yes, with the crucial caveat that "safe" doesn't mean "risk-free." It means being prepared, aware, and proactive. The world is an incredible place, full of beauty, culture, and unforgettable experiences. Don't let generalized fears prevent you from exploring it.

By leveraging resources like the U.S. Department of State, securing robust international travel insurance, practicing smart financial habits, and maintaining personal awareness, you can confidently embark on your next international adventure. The freedom of travel is a precious gift – equip yourself with the knowledge to enjoy it responsibly.

How to Travel More When You Have a Full-Time Job: Your Ultimate Guide

“I wish I could travel more, but I have a full-time job." Sound familiar? It’s the most common refrain I hear from aspiring adventurers. Most people assume I’m a full-time travel creator or remote worker, but I’m actually a regular office employee with about 20 days of PTO a year! That is more than the average American, but definitely not enough to be on the road all the time.

The dream of exploring far-off lands often feels incompatible with the reality of a 9-to-5, limited vacation days, and adult responsibilities. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be?

As a travel blogger who also spent years navigating the demands of a demanding corporate career, I’m here to tell you that traveling with a full-time job is not just a pipe dream – it’s entirely achievable. It requires strategy, intentional planning, and a shift in perspective, but it is 100% possible to see the world without quitting your job. Ready to transform your travel aspirations into actual passport stamps? Let’s dive in.

How to Travel More When You Have a Full-Time Job: Your Ultimate Guide

Master the Art of Weekend Getaways

This is your bread and butter for frequent travel. Don't underestimate the power of a long weekend or even a concentrated 2-day escape.

  • Look for Direct Flights: Minimize travel time by choosing destinations with direct flights from your nearest airport. A 2-hour flight is far more appealing for a weekend than a 6-hour journey with layovers.

  • Explore Local Gems: You don't always need to cross oceans. Discover incredible destinations within a few hours' drive or a short train ride from your home base. These can be surprisingly rewarding and much less stressful.

  • Maximize Holidays: Public holidays are goldmines. Instead of using a full vacation day for a Monday off, combine it with the preceding weekend to create a 3-day adventure without touching your core vacation allowance. Strategically adding one day to a 3-day weekend gives you 4 full days of travel.

  • Pack Light, Go Fast: A carry-on is your best friend. Skip checked bags to save time at the airport and be more agile once you arrive.

This works better with domestic travel, but that is ok! I have a very long bucket list of USA travel that I am slowly working my way through!

Strategize Your Vacation Days Like a Pro

Your limited PTO (Paid Time Off) is your most valuable travel currency. Treat it as such.

  • Calendar Mapping: As soon as the annual holiday calendar drops, I start plotting and planning! I look for all the travel opportunities around national holidays, long weekends, and potential "bridge" days (e.g., taking off Monday and Tuesday after a Thursday holiday to get a full week off). Here’s how you can break that down for Labor Day weekend

    • Leave for your trip on Thursday August 28th

    • Take off Friday the 29th

    • Return on a flight that lands late on the 1st or early am on the 2nd and go straight to the office.

    • That breaks down to 4 days of vacation for only one day of PTO

  • Request Early: Early birds really do get the worm! You need to submit those PTO requests as early as possible to make sure your picks get approved This increases your chances of approval, especially if you work in a team where vacation schedules are coordinated.

  • Combine Short Trips: Instead of taking one long two-week vacation, consider breaking it into several shorter trips (e.g., three 4-day trips). This gives you more travel experiences spread throughout the year.

  • The "Travel Day" Myth: Don't count travel days as wasted time. Take a red-eye flight on a Friday night, arrive Saturday morning, and you've essentially gained a full day of exploration. Similarly, fly back late Sunday or on a red-eye Sunday night.

Combine Countries Based on Region to Take Advantage of Short-Haul Flights

When in Rome, you don’t have to stop at Rome! Once you’ve made the long haul flight to a certain area, you can easily break up your trip by taking advantage of low-cost flights. I usually prefer flights to trains since they tend to be faster and reduce travel time when you are in a crunch, but there are some great train routes in Europe you can take advantage of.. Here are some combos I’ve done in a 1 week trip:

Istanbul & Cairo

Denmark, Sweden and Norway

Dubai & The Maldives

Optimize Your Travel Budget

More travel doesn't always mean more money. Smart financial habits can fund your adventures.

  • Automate Savings: Set up automatic transfers to a dedicated "Travel Fund" every payday. Even small amounts add up quickly.

  • Travel Rewards Credit Cards: This is a game-changer for budget travel. Utilize credit cards that offer points or miles on everyday spending. These points can be redeemed for free flights, hotels, or travel credits, significantly reducing your travel costs. Look for cards with generous sign-up bonuses.

  • Be Flexible on Destinations: Sometimes the best deals are to places you hadn't considered. Use tools like Google Flights' "Explore" feature to see where you can fly for cheap on your desired dates.

  • Prioritize Experiences Over Luxuries: Do you need the fanciest hotel, or would a charming boutique guesthouse allow you to extend your trip or take another one sooner? Make conscious choices about where you spend

Cultivate a Travel Mindset in Your Daily Life

Travel isn't just about the grand trips; it's a way of looking at the world.

  • Be a Local Tourist: Explore your own city or region! Discover hidden gems, try new restaurants, visit local museums. This scratches the travel itch and keeps the adventurous spirit alive.

  • Read Travel Blogs & Books: Immerse yourself in travel stories and guides. This fuels your wanderlust, helps you plan future trips, and keeps you motivated.

  • Connect with Fellow Travelers: Join online communities or local meetups. Sharing experiences and getting tips from others who travel with full-time jobs can be incredibly inspiring and helpful.

Traveling with a full-time job isn't about magic; it's about making conscious choices and employing smart strategies. By mastering weekend getaways, optimizing your PTO, exploring remote work, budgeting wisely, and fostering a continuous travel mindset, you can transform your annual leave from a brief escape into a series of enriching global adventures.

So, put away the excuses and pull out your calendar. Your next adventure is waiting, even with a demanding career. What's the first small step you'll take towards more travel this year? Share your biggest takeaway or your own "full-time job travel" hack in the comments below!

Tips to Maximize Your PTO and Travel More

  • Look for Direct Flights

  • Explore Local Gems

  • Maximize Holidays

  • Strategize your vacation days

  • Pack Light, Go Fast

  • Calendar map around company holidays

Beauty Essentials:

  1. Sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays with a high-quality sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection. Look for lightweight formulas that won't feel greasy or heavy on your skin, and don't forget to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating. Opt for a reef-safe formula if you're headed to a beach destination.

  2. Hydrating Facial Mist: Stay refreshed and rejuvenated on the go with a hydrating facial mist that provides an instant burst of moisture. Choose a formula infused with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or rose water to keep your skin glowing all summer long.

  3. Makeup Multitaskers: Look for products that do double duty. A tinted moisturizer provides light coverage and hydration, while a cream blush can also be used on your lips for a dewy flush.

Books & Technology

  1. Journal: Capture your travel memories and reflections in a stylish journal that reflects your personal style. Use it to jot down your favorite moments, document new experiences, and express your thoughts and emotions as you embark on your summer adventures.

Don’t Forget - Safety First! Other Travel Accessories:

  2. Personal Safety Alarm: Stay prepared for any situation with a personal safety alarm that emits a loud, attention-grabbing sound to deter potential threats and attract help in emergencies. Compact and easy to carry, a safety alarm provides added peace of mind for solo female travelers exploring unfamiliar destinations.

Bali on a Budget: Insider Tips for First-Time Travelers to Bali!

We are a few months into 2024 and since I moved to Hong Kong, I’m taking full advantage of the life here and being centrally located in an Asian travel hub. I’ve already been to Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and Bali, and will be heading off to Seoul in just a few weeks. I also already booked a trip back to Japan because that’s how much I loved it! I’ll be spending a long Japanese island vacation girls trip and literally can’t wait.

But even with all the excitement coming up, I still cannot get Bali out of my mind! I thought that Bali would just be a box to check while I lived so close, but I fully expected an overrated, crowded tourist trap. I was blown away when I got there and realized that all the hype was 100% true! Bali was incredibly beautiful, the people so warm and friendly, and the energy absolutely spectacular.

I can’t wait to plan another trip to Bali, and to explore other islands of Indonesia. If you are trying to plan a trip to Bali and don’t know where to start, here are some tips from a Bali skeptic turned enthusiast!

Bali on a Budget: Insider Tips for First-Time Travelers to Bali!

Avoid overpriced tour guides and DIY your itinerary

There are A LOT of guided trips to Bali, from influencer hosted to travel agent curated. Most of these trips include the Bali classic highlights and arranged to maximize convenience, but they also come at a steep price tag with a hefty markup! I’m usually a meticulous planner, but I took a wing it approach in Bali, mostly because I wanted to see how I would feel each day and leave time to absorb the energy of the destination.

Just a few days before departing, I lined up a full tour of Ubud on AirBnB Experiences and planned a half day exploring Uluwatu on our own. This cost a FRACTION of what an international travel agency would have charged and we got to do exactly what we wanted, at the pace that we wanted to move and it was perfect. Which brings me to my next point.

You Don’t Need to Pre-Book a Driver

If you are trying to see different parts of Bali that might be spread out or have a lot of traffic, you can book a driver for the day if you want to, but it’s pretty unnecessary. You can find a lot of tourist agencies advertising drivers for the day, but I found getting around with the Grab app was so easy, and allowed you to be spontaneous if you wanted. Grab is a ride-share app in Southeast Asia, and I’ve used it in Thailand, Singapore, and Bali and love it! In each city, it was efficient, affordable, and I never waited more than 5 minutes for a pick-up. Bali also has the option to choose a car or a scooter if you’re feeling adventurous! We used Grab to get all over the island and it worked like a charm.

And if you’re extra adventurous, why not rent your own scooter! Renting a scooter is one of the most budget-friendly and convenient ways to explore Bali. With rental fees as low as $5-$10 per day, you can zip around the island at your own pace, avoiding the high costs of taxis and private drivers. Just make sure to wear a helmet, familiarize yourself with local traffic rules, and drive safely.

If you like the idea of having the same driver for the day, you can always ask your Grab driver if he’d be willing to work out a rate for a full-day. That will definitely be cheaper than pre-booking an option from a foreign company, and make sure the driver gets the full amount.

Eat Like a Local

Indulge in the flavors of Bali without burning a hole in your wallet by dining at local warungs (small eateries) and street food stalls. Balinese cuisine is not only delicious but also incredibly affordable. Sample dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), and babi guling (suckling pig) for an authentic culinary experience that won't break the bank.

You can splurge on one or 2 fancy meals if you want some extra ambiance or to go somewhere Insta-famous, but there is no need to overspend on food in Bali. There are so many options at can’t beat prices.

Explore Beyond the Tourist Hotspots

While Bali's popular attractions are undoubtedly worth a visit, don't overlook the island's hidden gems and lesser-known destinations. Take the time to explore tranquil waterfalls, secluded beaches, and charming villages that offer a glimpse into traditional Balinese life. Rent a bicycle or simply wander aimlessly to discover Bali's hidden treasures away from the crowds.

There is a lot of travel pressure to always go to the most Instagram famous locations, but those are not always the most beautiful or authentic. Some sites involve getting up before dawn to wait in line an hour and a half just to copy the same photo everyone else on Instagram has. Let go of this kind of travel pattern and find unique places and hidden gems in the target destination.

Choose The Neighborhood You Stay in Carefully!

For first-time visitors to Bali, choosing where to stay can greatly influence their overall experience. Here are some different parts of Bali to consider, along with their pros and cons:

Ubud:

  • Pros: Ubud is Bali's cultural heart, known for its lush rice terraces, art galleries, and traditional Balinese architecture. It offers a peaceful atmosphere and plenty of opportunities for yoga, wellness retreats, and cultural experiences. Ubud is also centrally located, making it a convenient base for exploring other parts of the island.

  • Cons: Ubud can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Accommodation prices tend to be higher compared to other areas, and the traffic can be congested, particularly in the town center, and its a bit of a trek to the nearest beach.

Seminyak:

  • Pros: Seminyak is Bali's upscale beach resort area, renowned for its luxury hotels, trendy restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. It boasts beautiful beaches, world-class dining options, and chic boutiques, making it ideal for travelers seeking a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

  • Cons: Seminyak can be expensive, with higher accommodation and dining costs compared to other parts of Bali. The beaches can get crowded, especially during the peak tourist season, and the nightlife scene may not appeal to travelers looking for a more tranquil experience.

Canggu:

  • Pros: Canggu is a laid-back coastal village popular among surfers, digital nomads, and wellness enthusiasts. It offers a more relaxed vibe compared to Seminyak, with a growing number of hip cafes, beach clubs, and yoga studios. Canggu's beaches are great for surfing and watching stunning sunsets.

  • Cons: Canggu's infrastructure is still developing, so roads may be rough, and amenities may not be as abundant as in more established tourist areas. Accommodation options range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury villas, but availability can be limited during peak season.

Uluwatu:

  • Pros: Uluwatu is known for its dramatic cliffs, world-class surf breaks, and stunning ocean views. It offers a more secluded and laid-back atmosphere compared to other tourist areas, with plenty of opportunities for surfing, snorkeling, and beach hopping.

  • Cons: Uluwatu's remote location means that amenities may be limited, and transportation options can be more challenging compared to other parts of Bali. Accommodation options range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury resorts, but availability may be limited during peak season.

In any of these neighborhoods, you can take your pick from resorts, AirBnBs or guesthouses, depending on how many people you are traveling with, and your budgets and preferences!

Stay Respectful of the Locals

A lot of people see images of Bali and forget that Indonesia is a Muslim country! While Bali is predominantly Hindu, its still important to keep the cultural traditions and influences in mind. Be respectful of local customs and dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites, and be mindful of cultural sensitivities. Some temples will also ask you to put on a sarong, even if you are already wearing a long skirt or pants - and this applies to men and women! You may also have to put your hair up when visiting temples, so be sure to have something handy to clip it up when necessary.

Be Mindful of Your Environmental Impact

As you explore Bali on a budget, remember to tread lightly and minimize your environmental footprint. Respect the island's natural beauty by disposing of trash responsibly, conserving water and energy, and supporting eco-friendly businesses and initiatives. By practicing sustainable travel habits, you can help preserve Bali's stunning landscapes for the locals that call it home and the future generations of travelers to enjoy.

Avoid Roaming Charges with an E-Sim

Navigate Bali with ease without worrying about spotty service and expensive roaming. My favorite travel hack for staying connected is using the Air Arlo app. Air Arlo has affordable plans for tourists and you can quickly and easily install a local e-sim on your phone. Get $3 off your first eSIM purchase with code MALIKA6819!

Travel Smarter, Not Harder: 10 Tips to Start Plan Your Dream Trips with AI!

Are you ready to level-up travel planning in 2024???

One of my hidden travel hacks that has helped me save a ton of time, money and stress, is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). The travel landscape is constantly evolving, and artificial intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of this exciting transformation. All my frequent travelers remember the days spent glued to your screen, juggling browser tabs and social media posts, meticulously crafting itineraries and hoping you didn’t miss anything! Now the game has changed! AI assistants are here to streamline the process, personalize your experience, and unlock hidden gems you never knew existed.

But with so many AI-powered travel tools emerging, where do you even begin? This guide breaks down all the details you need to get started using AI to plan your your dream vacation in 2024.

Travel Smarter, Not Harder:

10 Tips to Start Plan Your Dream Trips with AI!

1. Find Your Perfect Destination with AI Matchmakers:

Ready to book a trip, but can’t decide where to go? Let AI help! Platforms like Wanderlust AI use your travel preferences, past trips, and even social media data to suggest destinations perfectly tailored to your interests. Answer a few questions about your budget, travel style, and desired activities, and watch personalized recommendations unfold.

2. Craft a Custom Itinerary with AI Travel Gurus:

No more generic itineraries or copying whatever is trending on Insta! Tools like "WayAway" leverage AI to build unique, day-by-day plans based on your preferences. Just pop in your interests, travel dates, and desired experiences, and the AI whizzes whip up a customized itinerary complete with transportation suggestions, hidden gems, and must-see attractions.

3. Score the Best Deals with AI Price Predictors:

The way this economy is looking, everyone is watching their pockets! If you are planning travel on a budget, AI can be your secret weapon. Services like "Airfarewatchdog" and "Hopper" analyze historical data and current trends to predict future flight and hotel prices. They'll alert you when prices are likely to drop, saving you precious pennies for IRL experiences when you land.

4. Conquer Language Barriers with AI Translation Tools

Navigating foreign countries can be daunting, especially if you don't speak the language. But there are so many new AI translators like "Google Translate" and "Microsoft Translator" that offer real-time translation through your phone's camera or microphone. Those can help bridge the communication gap and boosting your confidence while exploring.

5. Discover Off-the-Beaten-Path Gems with AI Recommendation Engines

If you’re a seasoned traveler, going back to a destination you’ve been to before, or just like to enjoy your trip while avoiding tourist traps, AI can help you uncover hidden gems! Platforms like "Roadtrippers" use sophisticated algorithms to suggest unique attractions, local eateries, and lesser-known experiences based on your interests, ensuring you experience the destination like a true local.

6. Pack Like a Pro with AI Packing Assistants

I’ve actually gotten pretty good at packing, especially the art of overstuffing a carry-on, while still having outfit variety. But I know it can be super stressful for a lot of people. AI can come to the rescue! Tools like "PackPoint" analyze weather forecasts, your itinerary, and even your personal style to generate a customized packing list, ensuring you have everything you need without overpacking.

7. Stay Safe and Secure with AI Travel Risk Assessment Tools

Safety always comes first! Stay informed with AI risk assessment tools like "Scoot." These platforms analyze real-time data on political instability, health risks, and natural disasters, empowering you to make informed decisions about your safety and well-being. And don’t forget to register with the State Departments STEP program for added security in case an emergency breaks out.

8. Travel Like a Foodie with AI Restaurant Recommendations

Foodies, rejoice! AI can curate the ultimate culinary adventure. Platforms like "Zomato" and "TripAdvisor" leverage AI to recommend restaurants based on your specific dietary preferences, budget, and desired cuisines. No more tourist traps - just delicious discoveries waiting to be savored.

9. Capture Memories Like a Pro with AI Photography Assistants

Capture stunning travel photos that will rival those of your favorite influencer with the help of AI! Apps like "MuseCam" and "Focos" use AI algorithms to improve your photos in real-time, suggesting optimal angles, lighting, and even offering automated post-processing magic.

10. Be sure to get started with the right prompts

Most importantly, AI has to know what you want in order to accurately deliver! If you are trying to plan a full itinerary and schedule using AI, be prepared to give it as much information to work with. I planned a draft itinerary of my upcoming trip to Thailand using Google Bard. I started with my prompt asking for a medium paced 3 day itinerary, including a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary, a cute cafe, and some of the cities most important temples. It gave me a version that I was able to quickly refine to make perfectly my style with just a few minor tweaks and additional prompts. It also gave me suggestions to add on or remove in case I wanted to speed up the pace of each day, or take it easier.

And for a trip to Japan for Sakura season, I’ll be using it to help me build the most efficient transportation routes between my hotel and different popular sites each day. Everything is pretty spread out, so I’m using AI to cluster sites together for optimal viewing and streamlined travel.

Just remember, while AI is a powerful tool, it's not a replacement for your own research and planning. Use AI recommendations as a starting point, personalize them to your unique needs. And since AI engines may not be instantly updated, always double-check information before making any bookings.

Have you used AI to plan a trip yet? Let me know what you loved (or hated) about it!

8 Tips to Experience Copenhagen Like a Local

Copenhagen is a charming city that is often ranked as one of the happiest cities in the world. With its picturesque streets, colorful houses, and world-renowned design, Copenhagen is a must-see destination for any traveler. However, there are a few things you should know before you go to make the most out of your trip. I’m currently on a 2 week trip through Scandinavia and after a few days in Copenhagen, here are my tips for getting the most out of your trip there!

8 Tips to Experience Copenhagen Like a Local

Biking is the way to go

Copenhagen is a very bike-friendly city, and it's one of the best ways to get around. There are bike lanes everywhere, and you can easily rent a bike for a reasonable price. You can explore the city at your own pace, and it's a great way to see the sights without breaking the bank. Just make sure you follow the traffic rules and watch out for pedestrians. Confession - I did not do this because I’ve actually never learned how to ride a bike! Maybe one day . . .

Visit the iconic Little Mermaid statue

The Little Mermaid statue is one of the most iconic symbols of Copenhagen, and it's a must-see when you're in the city. It's a statue of a mermaid sitting on a rock by the water's edge, and it's based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. While it's a bit of a walk from the city center, it's a nice it photo opportunity and something you’ll definitely be wondering about if you miss it. Personally it was a little underwhelming, but the walk was nice and it’s worth a quick stop!

Indulge in some delicious Danish pastries

Danish pastries are a must-try when you're in Copenhagen. They're delicious, flaky, and come in a variety of flavors. You can find them at bakeries and cafes all over the city, and they're perfect for a mid-day snack or breakfast. Make sure you try a traditional Danish pastry like a cinnamon roll or a wienerbrød.

Take a stroll in the Tivoli Gardens

The Tivoli Gardens is a famous amusement park in Copenhagen, and it's a great place to visit if you're traveling with kids or just want to have some fun. The park has a variety of rides, games, and attractions, as well as restaurants and cafes. It's also a beautiful place to take a stroll, especially at night when the park is lit up with colorful lights. I was expecting just a large garden, but it’s a great place to spend the day and there are plenty of food stands, rides and games! Even if you don’t want to go on a lot of rides, the unlimited ride pass is much more affordable than just paying for rides on their own, so if you think you want to go on more than 2 or 3, opt for the unlimited pass.

Explore the colorful houses of Nyhavn

Nyhavn is a picturesque neighborhood in Copenhagen that's known for its colorful houses and canals. It's a popular spot for tourists, but it's still worth a visit to see the beautiful architecture and take a stroll along the canal. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area, making it a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. If it’s chilly out look for one of the outdoor spots with heated seats and blankets so you can stay comfy and cozy while enjoying the fresh air and scenery.

Check out the city's museums and art galleries

Copenhagen is home to a wide range of museums and art galleries, including the National Museum of Denmark, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek art museum, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Whether you're interested in history, art, or design, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Many museums and galleries offer free admission on certain days, so be sure to check their websites for more information.

Embrace the Danish concept of hygge

Hygge is a Danish concept that roughly translates to "coziness" or "comfort". It's a way of life that emphasizes warmth, relaxation, and spending time with loved ones. Embracing hygge is a great way to fully experience Danish culture and get a sense of the city's laid-back atmosphere. You can do this by taking a leisurely stroll through the city's parks, enjoying a cup of coffee at a cozy cafe, or simply spending time with friends or family. So slow down, enjoy the moment, and embrace the concept of hygge during your trip to Copenhagen.

Take a Day Trip to Explore Denmark

If you want to explore another area of Denmark, why not a day trip to either Roskilde or North Zealand/ Located just 30 minutes outside of Copenhagen, the city of Roskilde is a great day trip destination for history buffs. It was once the capital of Denmark, and it's home to several historic landmarks, including the Roskilde Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is the burial place of many Danish kings and queens, and it's known for its stunning Gothic architecture. In addition to the cathedral, there are several museums in Roskilde, including the Viking Ship Museum, which features reconstructed Viking ships and artifacts from the Viking Age.

Or you can hop over to North Zealand to explore some incredible castles. North Zealand is a picturesque region located just north of Copenhagen, and it's home to several stunning castles and palaces. One of the most famous is Frederiksborg Castle, which is located in the town of Hillerød. The castle dates back to the 17th century and is known for its stunning Baroque architecture and beautiful gardens. Another popular castle is Kronborg Castle, which is located in the town of Helsingør. It's known for its association with Shakespeare's play Hamlet and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. North Zealand is also home to several charming towns and villages, making it a great destination for a scenic day trip.

Where to Stay in Copenhagen

If you're planning a trip to Copenhagen, consider staying at the NH Collection Hotel in Copenhagen. This hotel is located in the heart of the city, just a few minutes' walk from the Tivoli Gardens and the Central Station. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. The hotel also has a restaurant that serves delicious Danish and international cuisine, as well as a fitness center for guests to enjoy. The hotel was kind enough to offer me a media stay in exchange for review, and it was an amazing place to stay during my trip!

Summer Ready! 10 Tips You Need to Look and Feel Your Best This Season

Summer is just around the corner, and it's time to get ready for the season of sunshine, warm weather, and outdoor fun! Whether you're planning a beach vacation, a pool party, or just looking forward to enjoying the sunny days at home, here are some lifestyle tips to help you make the most out of your summer and get ready for the upcoming season.

Summer Ready! 10 Tips You Need to Look and Feel Your Best This Season

Stay Hydrated

As the temperature rises, it's crucial to stay hydrated to keep your body functioning optimally. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during outdoor activities. You can also include hydrating foods in your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges, which are high in water content and can help keep you hydrated.

Protect Your Skin

Sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of your summer routine. Exposure to harmful UV rays can damage your skin and increase the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it generously to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, arms, and legs.

Don't forget to reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. And don’t forget your eyes! They need protection from the sun as well. The strong UV rays during the summer can harm your eyes and increase the risk of eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Make sure to wear sunglasses with UV protection that block out 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Look for sunglasses that wrap around your eyes for maximum coverage and choose ones with polarized lenses to reduce glare, especially when you're around water. Don't forget to also wear a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.

Get Your Summer Wardrobe Ready

It's time to put away your winter clothes and update your wardrobe for summer. Invest in lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen that are perfect for hot weather. Opt for light-colored clothing, as they reflect heat and keep you cooler. Don't forget to add some stylish sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and comfortable sandals to complete your summer look.

Stay Active Outdoors

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities and get moving. From swimming and hiking to biking and beach volleyball, there are plenty of fun ways to stay active during the sunny season. Regular physical activity not only helps you stay fit and healthy but also boosts your mood and energy levels. So, make the most of the longer days and warmer weather by incorporating outdoor activities into your routine.

Plan Your Summer Vacation

If you're planning a summer getaway, now is the time to start planning and booking your travel arrangements. Whether it's a beach vacation, a camping trip, or a city break, plan ahead to get the best deals on flights, accommodations, and activities. Research your destination and make a packing list to ensure you have everything you need for a stress-free and enjoyable trip.

Stay Cool and Comfortable

As the mercury rises, it's important to stay cool and comfortable in the summer heat. Dress in loose, light-colored clothing that allows air to circulate and keeps you cool. Use fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, and take cool showers or use a damp towel on your neck and wrists to lower your body temperature.

Eat Fresh and Healthy

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are abundant during the season. Incorporate plenty of salads, smoothies, and grilled vegetables into your diet for a nutritious and refreshing summer meal. Opt for lighter and cooler foods, such as yogurt, salads, and chilled soups, to help you stay refreshed and hydrated.

Take Care of Your Hair

Summer can be harsh on your hair, with exposure to sun, saltwater, and chlorine from swimming. Take care of your locks by using a hair sunscreen spray to protect your hair from UV rays, and rinse your hair with clean water after swimming to remove saltwater or chlorine residue. Deep condition your hair regularly to replenish moisture, and consider using a wide-brimmed hat or a stylish scarf to protect your hair from direct sunlight.

Plan Outdoor Social Activities

Summer is the perfect time to connect with friends and family and plan outdoor social activities. From BBQs and picnics to outdoor movie nights and beach bonfires, there are endless opportunities for fun and memorable gatherings. Plan ahead and make a list of outdoor activities you want to do with your loved ones, and create lasting memories while enjoying the warm weather.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Summer can be a busy season with lots of activities and events, but it's important to also prioritize self-care and relaxation. Take time to practice relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing to reduce stress and stay balanced. You can also create a calming outdoor space in your backyard or balcony with some comfy seating, soft lighting, and relaxing music to unwind and enjoy the summer evenings.

Getting ready for summer involves more than just packing your bags for a vacation or buying a new swimsuit. It's about taking care of your health, staying safe in the sun and water, staying active, and enjoying quality time with loved ones. By following these lifestyle tips, you can make the most out of the summer season and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. So, put on your sunscreen, grab your sunglasses, and get ready to embrace the warmth and joy of summer! Happy summer preparations!

Planning a Trip to Morocco? Don't Go Without These 12 Pro Travel Tips

Morocco is a beautiful country located in North Africa, known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. Whether you're planning a trip to the bustling cities of Marrakech and Casablanca or exploring the quiet, traditional towns of the Atlas Mountains, Morocco has something for everyone. I was To make the most of your trip, here are some travel tips for Morocco:

12 Pro Travel Tips for Your Trip to Morocco

Dress conservatively

Morocco is a Muslim country, and as such, it's important to dress appropriately. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, and cover your shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and other religious sites. Women may also want to consider wearing a headscarf, particularly in more conservative areas.

Learn some basic Arabic or French

While many people in Morocco speak English, it's always a good idea to learn some basic Arabic or French phrases before you go. Not only will this help you to communicate with locals, but it will also show that you respect their culture.

Stay in a Riad

When I was in Morocco, Riad Star graciously offered me a complimentary stay. Riad Star was formerly the home of Jazz Age superstar Josephine Baker, and is now an intimate boutique hotel with just thirteen guest rooms. The décor was thoughtful, hospitality top chart, and location ideal for exploring the Medina and souks of Marrakech.

Plus they have delicious home cooked meals, like Moroccan crepes at breakfast and lamb tagine and roasted veggies for dinner. I cannot recommend Riad Star enough if you are looking for a place to stay in Marrakech.

The company also owns Riad Spice and Riad Cinnamon, if you want similar vibes and service but can’t find a room available at Riad Star.

Bargain when shopping

Bargaining is a common practice in Morocco, particularly in markets and souks. Don't be afraid to negotiate on prices, but be respectful and polite when doing so.

Hire a local guide

A local guide can be a great way to learn more about Moroccan culture and history, as well as to navigate the sometimes confusing maze of markets and souks. Consider hiring a guide for at least part of your trip. I linked a few of my favorites below, so keep reading for more.

Try the street food

Moroccan cuisine is delicious and varied, with plenty of street food options to try. Don't be afraid to sample some of the local delicacies, such as tagine, couscous, and pastries. Just take some precautions to avoid the risk of food borne illness! Street food is a popular and affordable way to eat in Morocco, but food that is not properly prepared or cooked can carry harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause food poisoning or other illnesses.

To reduce the risk of getting sick from street food in Morocco, be sure to choose food that is cooked in front of you and is served hot, avoid raw or undercooked meat, seafood, and eggs, wash your hands thoroughly before eating, and pay attention to the cleanliness of the food stall and its surroundings and the hygiene practices of the person preparing the food.

Drink plenty of water

Morocco can be hot and dry, particularly in the summer months. Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and avoid drinking tap water. There aren’t many reliable sources to refill a water bottle, so just be sure to buy a few bottles of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Pay attention to your belongings

As with any travel destination, it's important to take care with your belongings in Morocco. Keep an eye on your bags and wallets, particularly in busy areas, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Respect local customs

Morocco is a conservative country, and it's important to respect local customs and traditions. For example, avoid public displays of affection, particularly between couples of different genders. I was with a friend of mine in Marrakech so it was easy there, but in Casablanca I had to keep reminding myself not to hold my husband’s hand when we were walking, and a few times I forgot I noticed the stares from locals.

Visit the Sahara or Agafay desert

No trip to Morocco would be complete without a visit to the Sahara desert. Take a camel ride into the dunes, watch the sunset over the sand, and spend a night in a traditional Berber tent. If you’re only staying in Marrakech a trip to the Sahara may not be feasible since it’s about an 8 hour drive away, but you can check out the nearby Agafay desert. it’s rockier but can still make for a really fun day trip from Marrakech and has all the classic activities like camel riding, quad biking, hot air balloon rides and stargazing.

Take it slow

Morocco can be overwhelming, with its bright colors, spicy smells, and bustling crowds. Take your time, enjoy the moment, and don't try to cram too much into your itinerary. Instead, savor the experience and immerse yourself in the culture. Staying in a riad can help you maximize the calm, tranquil vibes and escape the hustle and bustle of the city with ease.

Avoid some common scams

While Morocco is generally a safe country for travelers, it's important to be aware of common scams that can occur. Here are some scams to avoid in Morocco:

  1. Fake guides - Some individuals may approach you in busy tourist areas and offer to be your guide, but then demand exorbitant fees for their services. It's best to book a guide through a reputable tour company like Viator or your hotel.

  2. Unofficial taxis - Avoid taking unofficial taxis, as they may overcharge you or take you on an unnecessarily long route to your destination. Always use official taxis and agree on a fare beforehand (most will not use the meter so be sure to ask and negotiate the fare in advance.

  3. Pickpocketing - As in any busy tourist area, pickpocketing can occur in Morocco. Keep your belongings close to you, and be wary of individuals who bump into you or distract you.

  4. Fake products - Be wary of vendors selling fake products, such as counterfeit designer handbags or traditional Moroccan textiles. It's best to shop in reputable stores or markets with fixed prices.

  5. Scams at ATMs - Be cautious when using ATMs, as some may have skimming devices that steal your credit card information. Use ATMs in secure locations, such as banks or shopping malls.

  6. Street games - Avoid participating in street games, such as shell games or three-card monte, as they are often rigged and designed to scam tourists.

  7. False emergencies - Scammers may approach you on the street claiming to have an emergency, such as a sick family member or a lost passport, and ask for money. Just ignore them and keep it moving quickly.

Have you been to Morocco? It truly is a fascinating and beautiful country, full of culture, history, and natural wonders. By following these travel tips, you can make the most of your trip, and have a memorable and enjoyable experience.

6 Ways I Will Never Be the Same After Moving Internationally

Happy New Year! It has been almost exactly 18 months since I moved out of the USA and I have learned so much in my experiences as an expat. While I currently live in Lebanon, this isn’t my first time living abroad. I have spent a few years living in Italy as well. If you want to learn more about my life in Italy, be sure to watch this videos on my YouTube channel!

I recently watched a video recently on TFD, one of my favorite YouTube channels, and it was about how Chelsea’s experience living in France changed some of her daily habits and it really got me thinking. I realized that after counting up the time I spent living in Italy and living in Lebanon, I have spent 5 years of my adult life out of the USA, and both stretches have been in the formative years of my mid 20’s and now mid 30’s.

The time I spent in foreign countries was punctuated by graduate school, my first job heading a major project and really being in charge, learning languages, having a destination wedding and building a global life with my husband.

It has definitely been quite a ride, so here are 6 ways I have permanently changed after living abroad.

6 Ways I Will Never Be the Same After Moving Internationally

I Take a Lunch Break

I’m from New York city, so the earlier years of my career were spent ordering lunch, doing a mad grab from reception, then eating with one hand while continuing to type with the other. But after I moved to Italy it was a whole new ball game.

My entire team and I would walk out for lunch, grab an outdoor table and sit down for a multiple course lunch - sometimes with wine! We were usually gone for at least an hour, sometimes an hour and a half every day of the week and guess what. Projects still got done, deadlines still got met, the entire company didn’t fall apart because the team decided not to scarf sad salads at their desk.

While it may be hard to push back on the kind of American corporate culture that normalizes intense work hours with little to no breaks during the day, try to experiment just a little bit. Assuming you’re back in the office every day, start slowly breaking the sad lunch desk habit at least twice a week. You will come back feeling recharged, relaxed and ready to be more productive the rest of the day.

I take all of my vacation days

I say this all the time, but one of the best things about living abroad is the ease of travel. Whether it’s by plane, train or road trip, everything suddenly is so much closer and more accessible once you leave the USA. Long weekend escapes are common, but so are 3 week long summer vacations where the office essentially closes and everyone goes on a beach vacation.

Unfortunately the average American only has 10 days vacation and some companies still have draconian policies about how you can accrue your vacation days and how many can be used in one stretch. But I make it a point to use every single vacation day available. The only reason I think it’s legit to keep some days in a calendar year is if the company lets you roll your accrued vacation days into the next year and you want to save them for a longer trip. And on another note, if you have sick days that you never use, give yourself a break!

Sick days exist for a reason, and if you are feeling under the weather it is within your right to use them. Too many of us feel the need to haul ass to the office while sneezing and coughing our lungs out, or even just being on the mend. Don’t be a hero, give yourself a break and call out, even if you just rest up on your couch or take a mental health day out of the office.

I am more careful about my spending

Some of the habits that I’ve picked up in Lebanon in particular will always stay with me, and one of them is carefully monitoring my spending. Lebanon is a cash economy - because of everything happening with the economy and local currency credit card use here is nonexistent. Everyone goes out at all times with a fat stack of cash and because of that I am so much more cognizant of my spending.

If I’m out at dinner I choose my entrĂ©e carefully and do a mental count of the cash in my wallet versus the cost of a second drink or dessert because I have to physically have the cash to cover my meal and anything else I did before dinner or planned to do after.  While it can be an inconvenience to have to plan so carefully - not because you can’t afford it but simply because swiping a card isn’t an option, it does help keep my spending curbed because racking up credit card debt is simply not an option.

And yes there have been many times where I have changed social plans because I didn’t get to take money out before it was too late or found my stack of cash running low.  There is also very little spontaneity - walk by a store and want to buy a cute dress - too bad. Overspent earlier in the day and found out all your friends are heading to your favorite bar later? Not you. But I do love that most stores are really flexible with holding items because they know everyone in the country is in the same boat.

I socialize in ways that don’t just revolve around eating or drinking

In the US most of my social plans revolved around brunches, dinners, and bar hopping, but since I’ve been an expat I spend more of my weekends doing cultural or physical activities. When you first move abroad it can definitely feel like an extended vacation, and all of the things you might pack into a few day trip, you tend to spread out over time. You definitely want to get to them, but you know that you have time.

So a lot of my socializing has started to revolve around sightseeing, museums, touristic or cultural activities, day trips, or even things like hiking or going on a long random walk around the city.

I have a more relaxed approach to beauty

Back at home I had my regular favorite salon and stuck to my regimen and favorite places like clockwork.  But living abroad and bouncing between countries forces you to take your chances at new places, or figure out ways to do it yourself. I have experimented with cuts and color in Lebanon, getting sew in weaves in Paris and learned how to perfect a lot of my hair styling and updos for formal events that popped up here and there.

Bouncing around countries means a willingness to relax whatever standards of beauty you may have held yourself too, especially when it comes to blending in. Now, women in Lebanon definitely get glam, like even beyond glam. So I have plenty of opportunities to get dressed up and done up. But some of my other expat friends live in places where it’s not culturally acceptable to go out in a full face of makeup complete with lashes and perfectly coiffed hair just for a grocery run. Take your approach from the locals in the country you are living in, and don’t overthink not having access to your favorite salons or treatments at home.

I am always prepared to leave

And last but not least on a sad note, living as an expat is an amazing experience, but one that is not without its fair share of instability. So considering that one thing that expat life has permanently changed for me is the fact that I am always ready to leave. The last few years have turned the world upside down, and with increased political, economic, and environmental instability - I am always ready to dip at a moment’s notice. That means always having the funds available to book a last minute plane ticket and a plan for where I would go in an emergency.

For example, if shit ever really hit the fan in Beirut, I know that while there are very few daily flights to the US, there are about anywhere from 6-10 daily flights to cities like Istanbul, Paris, Doha, and Frankfurt, so even if I can’t get home, I can definitely get somewhere else.

I am a huge fan of the go bag - an emergency grab it and run backpack, but I also always keep a carry-on suitcase halfway packed with some basics so I could actually properly pack it in just a few minutes. Give some thought to how you have prepared yourself for an emergency or evacuation. It’s the very unsexy part of traveling and living abroad, but the kind of planning that could potentially save your lives.

10 Mistakes Not to Make in Rome

Have you been dreaming of a summer in Italy? Italy can be a dream destination year round, but summer is one of the most popular times to visit. I just came back from my 3rd or 4th trip to Rome, and after a few trips there, I have seen how the city has changed over the years and have learned so much about how to have the best trip possible!. There are a few tricks of the trade you should know to have the best experience possible in Rome, so I wanted to share some of the travel tips I’ve learned over the years.

Hopefully these will help you plan the best trip you could possibly have.

So, keep reading for 10 Mistakes Not to Make in Rome.

10 Mistakes Not to Make in Rome

Colosseum Tourist Site in Rome

Doing too much sightseeing in Rome

So obviously Rome is known for its sites and there is definitely a lot you can’t miss out on!

But if you jam pack your itinerary running from tourist site to tourist site, you will miss out on the allure of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. There was an Italian saying that became a trending sound on TikTok and Reels a few months ago that basically sums it up - la dolce far niente or the sweetness of doing nothing. On any trip to Rome, or really Italy in general, you need to experience that!

Sit in a cafĂ© for hours on end, roam through the streets with no real purpose or itinerary. That is one piece of any Italian vacation that 100% should not be missed.

Not buying tickets to tourists sights in Rome in advance

Whatever sites you plan on seeing - be sure to pick up those tickets for entry online in advance!

Rome is notorious for crowds and epic lines everywhere, so definitely book your tickets a few weeks in advance.  And be sure to get them from an official site, not just any random website that says “skip the line tickets” when you look them up on Google.

The official sites will have the best prices and most updated calendar of availability, so unless you are going on a fully guided tour that specifically includes entry fees to the sites you’d like to see, avoid third party vendors.

Eating lunch or dinner near tourist sights in Rome

It may be tempting to stop in whatever restaurant is calling your name as you finish a morning of sightseeing, but generally speaking, I avoid eating at any restaurants directly near a tourist attraction. The food will be mediocre at best and way overpriced.

Do some research in advance on the best places to eat in each neighborhood, or at least walk a few blocks away from tourist central before grabbing a table to eat. The only exception is for my influencers or Insta babes who care more about getting the right shot than they do about the food - and I myself will admit I am guilty of this at times!

I have definitely had my share of overpriced coffees and bland appetizers at Instagram friendly restaurants with an iconic view, but at least that counts as a business expense for me!

Not watching out for pickpockets in Rome

Ok this is a big safety tip for Rome, as it is for most touristy cities in Europe - be on the lookout for pickpockets. It’s pretty common, especially around the major tourist attractions, and because those small narrow streets can get incredibly crowded, it’s very easy for someone to pickpocket you without you even realizing it.

Be attentive to your belongings, use a cross body bag or something that will keep your stuff close to you, zipped up and in front of your body, and avoid putting things in your pockets, especially your back pockets.

Also don’t bring out more valuables than you absolutely have to. Keep one credit card with you at a time and a small amount of cash each day, and never the original of your passport!

Walking Around at Night in Rome

Here’s another safety tip. While Rome is gorgeous during the day, sunset and early evening, there are definitely some sketchy spots at night. And while I love a good aimless stroll through the Eternal City, after dark it’s a bad idea!

While pickpocketing is pretty common by day, at night you are more likely to encounter a more violent robbery, especially if you find yourself wandering around the train station or outside of the main tourist hubs.

And getting a taxi back to your hotel is not always an easy feat. Most of the time you will be waiting 10 minutes or more for an Uber, or you will have to wander around until you find the nearest taxi stand and then wait there until one pulls up.  If you want to experience Roman nightlife, do so with a group of friends - not on your own or if it’s just 2 of you.

And pre book your private driver or have your hotel reserve you a taxi pickup so you will have a ride waiting for you when you leave your bar, club or wherever.

Not Dressing Appropriately When in Rome

So clothing choices matter a lot whenever you are traveling, and it’s no different in Rome! Do yourself a favor and show off some of your style. I try not to judge, but it absolutely kills me to see the typical American tourist uniform in such a stylish, chic city.  If you’re going to wear shorts they can be cute fashionable ones, not gym shorts or ill fitting cargo ones.

Throw away the ridiculous fanny packs and ugly t-shirts, and embrace some more fashionable choices. And you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style. Linen, slip dresses, loose fitting button downs, feminine blouses or cool girl graphic tees are all amazing options and they all will be comfortable.

My Italian summer wardrobe was a mix of rompers, sundresses, and a little short suit for days when we were traveling in between cities. Take some inspiration from Instagram, TikTok or right here on this blog to figure out how to look your best while staying comfortable of course.

Not Leaving Time to Enjoy the Shopping in Rome

Rome is a great city for shopping and the best part is - you can find amazing products for every budget. Of course the city is known for the high end luxury brands, so if you are really living la dolce vita and want a souvenir you won’t forget, treat yourself to something from your favorite Italian luxury brand.

And right now the euro is at near record lows against the dollar, so take advantage of that! When we were in Rome we did a mini spree at Gucci and I got some really sexy Italian bikinis from random shops around town.

You can also treat yourself to wine, pastas or other foodie items, but I find that if you are in a major city like New York or LA the imports are just as good, so those items may not be worth hauling back. Just be sure to leave room in your itinerary to enjoy the shopping in town, and be sure to get to the airport early enough to do the VAT refund.

You’ll get back anywhere from around 12-18% depending on the purchase price, which can add up to a nice chunk of change. When we left Rome it took about an extra 30 minutes to find the VAT refund desk and process the refund, and that was without much of a line, so keep that in mind when you are scheduling your airport departure.

Skipping Aperitivo When Dining Out in Rome

Do not skip aperitivo, it was quite possibly my favorite thing about living in Italy! If you are new to the concept, aperitivo is happy hour on steroids. Most restaurants offer it from around 5 or 6 until 8 or 9, to help prepare your appetite for the big dinner that would follow. Depending on the restaurant you can expect anything from light bites, like prosciutto, cheese and crackers, to a full on buffet of options.

Honestly, if you find the right aperitivo you can load up on the buffet and skip dinner all together – which I have done a number of times. Great tip for those travelers on a budget!

Expecting to eat a big breakfast in Rome

When in Italy, eat as the Italians do. That means if you’re used to eating a big American or English style breakfast - get unused to it! Yes, the tourist traps and big chain hotels will probably offer it, but just give the classic Italian breakfast a try. It’s fast and simple - just a coffee and pastry - typically called a brioche or cornetto which is similar to a croissant.

After eating it for nearly 3 years I can definitively say I’m not a huge fan. But when traveling it’s important to explore local customs and food traditions, and this is kind of one of them.

Eating the wrong gelato in Rome

So not all gelato is made equal and there is a lot of terrible gelato in Rome! Like absolutely appalling. If you are trying to pick the perfect gelato place - keep this pro tip in mind. If you see the gelato piled up on display - keep it moving. High quality gelato will be stored in the tubs with a lid on top, so you won’t get to see the flavor or color until you are being served. And keep the taste testing to a minimum, especially if there is a long line!

Are you planning a trip to Rome this year or next? Hopefully these tips helped! Check out more of my travel related content and some other helpful articles below. And be sure to follow me on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for more tips on traveling internationally and moving abroad.
