I'm here loving a long holiday weekend in the city! I've racked up a lot of miles this year between Colombia, Cuba, and Hawaii and as much as I love to travel, I've been looking forward to some downtime in the city I love. Since July 4th is on a Tuesday this year, a lot of offices are closed giving us an amazing 5 day weekend. Here are some of my favorite summer things to do if you are staying local on a long weekend.
Take the ferry to Dumbo
I just discovered the NYC ferry runs from my neighborhood in LIC to Dumbo and the trip is just a quick 25 minutes! It's much more pleasant than being underground on the subway for an hour. Once in Dumbo you can wander the beautiful streets, stop at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Company for some yummy fresh ice cream, or grab a bite Italian style at the new Cecconi's on the water. The area is lively and the scenery makes for amazing photos.
Head North to the New York Botanical Garden
The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is more popular in my circle. but the one in the Bronx is by far the best. The conservatory is stunning and the seasonal exhibits are always beautiful. I'm a member so make it up there a few times a year. The membership perks are so worthwhile, so if you plan to visit at least 3 times a year, consider signing up!
Surf, Sun and Tacos at Rockaway Beach
Rockaway is one of my favorite beaches in the city. You can lounge in the sun, take a surf lesson, then head off beach to Tacoway Beach for the best tacos in the city.
Plan a long trip
Let's be real, summer in the city can get insanely hot. Instead of sweating like crazy outside all day, post up at home under your AC and use the time for some vacation planning. Researching hotels and activities can take hours and get you and your friends excited for an upcoming adventure!
